Superman's New Weapon Is Live, And Honestly, It Makes All of His Epic Powers Pointless

Warning! Spoilers for Action Comics #1080!There are few superheroes with as many incredible powers as Superman, but one surprising new invention makes nearly all of his powers useless, as this one weapon seems capable of taking down just about every villain he faces. Superman officially has a new Phantom Zone gun, and it changes the game completely.

Superman's new ridiculously overpowered Phantom Zone weapon debuts in Action Comics #1080 by Mark Waid and Clayton Henry. In this story, dozens of Phantom Zone prisoners have escaped and begun terrorizing the entire universe. Superman obviously can't just drag them back to Earth, so with the help of Mr. Terrific, Superman creates a weapon that's so strong, it kind of invalidates his powers.

His newest weapon is none other than a Phantom Zone Gun, which fires a beam that sends people right back to the Phantom Zone. Mon-El admits that this gun isn't as strong as the Phantom Zone Projector, but it's more than strong enough to deal with targets one-on-one, which is proven by how the Phantom Zone Guns can send fully-powered Kryptonians back to the Phantom Zone.

The Phantom Zone has always been one of the most dangerous places in DC lore: not dangerous because there are monsters or anything life-threatening there, but dangerous because once someone is sent there, it's incredibly difficult to escape. The Phantom Zone has always been the last resort prison for those who truly refuse to be rehabilitated, including characters like Doomsday, for example. But the most difficult part has always been sending someone to the Phantom Zone. Doing so required using the Phantom Zone Projector, which was fairly cumbersome to use.

Mr. Terrific's new invention seems to completely get rid of that problem. Now, the entire Superman Family has their own Phantom Zone Guns that they can use on whoever they want. While it is stated that the Phantom Zone Guns aren't as powerful as the Phantom Zone Projector, that seems to be because the Phantom Zone Projector can send a group to the Phantom Zone all at once, but the Phantom Zone Guns can only focus on single targets. That "problem" doesn't seem like much of a drawback, and considering the guns work on fully-powered Kryptonians, there aren't many in the DCU who would be able to resist this new weapon.

All of Superman's powers make him incredibly strong, but there's simply nothing more powerful than pointing a gun at an enemy and teleporting them into a near-inescapable prison. Combine this new weapon with Superman's flight and speed, and there's really nothing anyone can do against him. While it's true that these Phantom Zone Guns have only been created to help hunt down escaped Phantom Zone prisoners, there's no reason why Superman can't keep using them. After all, DC recently hinted at a conflict with Zod coming up, so now Superman should have the perfect weapon to use against one of his greatest enemies.
