Wicked Home Release Date Confirmed

The home release date for Wicked has been unveiled. The movie, which has become a major critical and commercial success, adapts the first half of the Wizard of Oz prequel musical of the same name, following the friendship between Galinda (Ariana Grande-Butera), the future Glinda the Good, and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the future Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked release kicked off the weekend before Thanksgiving, debuting at No. 1 above Ridley Scott's Gladiator II and so far maintaining a spot in the Top 3 every weekend since.

What This Means For Wicked

The Musical's Dominance Will Continue

This home release date comes at the perfect time for the 2024 movie, at a time when the Wicked box office is finally winding down after a record-smashing run between U.S. Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition to surpassing 1978's Grease as the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time at the domestic box office, it has climbed to a total of more than $575 million worldwide. Because it reportedly cost roughly $150 million, its break-even point is likely somewhere around $375 million, a point it already passed some time ago.

Wicked is currently the second highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time worldwide, behind Mamma Mia! ($609.9 million).

In addition to boosting the movie's general profits at the tail end of its theatrical release, the Wicked home release will also benefit from premiering over a holiday weekend with no new release movies coming to theaters. Although Christmas Day introduces a raft of awards season competitors with the premieres of Babygirl, Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown, and The Fire Inside, New Year's Eve is bereft of major wide release titles, as is the first weekend in January 2025. This will allow Wicked to shine even brighter in the movie marketplace as the New Year arrives.

Its Home Release Leads Directly Into Its 2025 Sequel

Another way that the Wicked home release is well-timed is the fact that the second half of the musical has been adapted into the upcoming Wicked: For Good, which is due in theaters on November 21, 2025. Being available at home for the entirety of 2025 will allow the movie to pick up a wider audience as well as be rewatched by its biggest fans, reinforcing interest in the follow-up movie over the course of the full 332 days of the year leading up to the sequel's premiere.
