Forget The Millennium Falcon, Star Wars' Newest Starship Really Is A Hunk Of Junk

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has introduced a new starship that gives even the Millennium Falcon a run for its money as Star Wars' biggest "hunk of junk." Although the Falcon has become iconic in Star Wars movies and TV shows and is largely considered one of the best starships in Star Wars, it is a long-running joke in the franchise that the Falcon is really just a piece of junk. Luke was the first to verbalize this in the original Star Wars trilogy, but Rey reiterated it in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, referring to the Falcon as "garbage."

Skeleton Crew has now introduced a new ship, the Onyx Cinder, a pirate starship previously owned by the famed pirate Tak Rennod. Despite having quite the legacy, though, the Onyx Cinder has clearly fallen into disrepair over the years, no doubt in part because it was lodged in the ground of At Attin, unused for an indeterminate amount of time. This now raises the question: Is the Onyx Cinder an even bigger "hunk of junk" than the Millennium Falcon?

Perhaps the biggest difference between the Millennium Falcon and the Onyx Cinder, which puts the Onyx Cinder in the running for Star Wars' biggest piece of junk, is the fact that, despite the Falcon's reputation as 'garbage,' it obviously conceals some extensive power. After all, one of the first things Star Wars audiences learn about the Falcon is that it made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. In A New Hope, it wasn't entirely clear what that really meant, but it was clear that the starship had some real power and speed to it.

That doesn't seem to be the case for the Onyx Cinder whatsoever. In fact, in true pirate fashion, the Onyx Cinder seems to comprise a number of makeshift parts. Presumably, rather than pay for more serious repairs or upkeep on the ship, Tak Rennod found (or, better worded, stole) pieces from other ships to replace the Onyx Cinder's broken or malfunctioning parts. This has left the starship truly falling apart, which has only become increasingly clear throughout Skeleton Crew.

Will The Onyx Cinder Even Survive The Trip Back To At Attin?

The Kids' Future Remains Unclear, But Can The Ship Even Make It Back?

Given the current condition of the Onyx Cinder, it's worth questioning whether the ship even has the power to get the kids back to At Attin at this point. Of course, the Skeleton Crew kids might have a much bigger obstacle in their path to get home based on Skeleton Crew episode 5. During that episode, Jod Na Nawood betrayed the children, taking over as captain, and in an effort to escape, the kids dropped into some sort of trap door.

SM-33 is also now working with Nawood, as he has become the captain, raising further questions about whether the kids would even be able to fly the Onyx Cinder on their own if they managed to get back to it. It will be interesting to see whether the kids and Nawood really go their separate ways following episode 5. In either case, Star Wars' newest starship in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew may have the Millennium Falcon beat as a piece of junk.
