One Piece Just Changed How Fans See Its Biggest Tragedy Forever

One Piece debuted one of the series' most tragic and heartbreaking stories a while ago, and it was received and showered with praise. However, the latest chapter, while it does present a wholesome development, hints at the possibility that this storyline will be undone and watered down a lot. While the possibility is high, there is some hope that it will not transpire.

In One Piece chapter #1134, Jimbei handed Vegapunk Lillith a huge box that was revealed to contain a perfect replica of Vegapunk's original body, much more advanced than even the satellites. She then went on to say that she would stay in Elbaf to construct a laboratory, and this is where Bonney went up to her and asked her to fix her dad. Vegapunk said she would definitely restore Kuma, and bring back his senses and sentience.

The Beauty of Kuma's Story Lies in Tragedy

Kuma's Backstory Was One of the Series' Best

Kuma's backstory took the One Piece fandom by storm. Not only did it finally show a never-before-seen side of one of the most mysterious characters in the series, but it also made sense of many unexplained events. The flashback was tragic and devastating, to say the least, as Kuma's entire life was nothing but setback after setback. Despite all that, he managed to smile and protect his loved ones, and most of all, Bonney. He sacrificed himself to save her and cure her. Furthermore, when he appeared in Egghead, it was an incredible moment when he saved Bonney despite having his humanity and senses erased and being turned into a robot. It showed that no matter what, his powerful feelings as a father could never be removed.

Kuma's story is profoundly beautiful due to his self-sacrifice, and bringing him back would diminish this significance. While a reunion between father and daughter would be a heartwarming moment, it would undermine the tragic elements that made fans appreciate Kuma. Additionally, a crucial aspect of Kuma's narrative is to illustrate the darkness and evil present in the world, so magically curing him and reversing his condition would affect the grim tone of One Piece.

Kuma's Tragedy Shouldn't Be Reversed

Kuma's moment of punching Saturn, the man who had oppressed him his entire life, while also protecting his daughter, was an incredible payoff to the extensive backstory and years of suffering he endured. This served as a fitting conclusion for his character. Although it has a bittersweet quality, it was still remarkable. However, undoing his condition would be akin to reversing his development and sacrifice. Furthermore, it would be an extra character the series would have to handle and make relevant, otherwise it wouldn't make sense.

Luckily, Vegapunk healing Kuma is still a possibility, and anything could happen to stop this from happening. However, from his tone, he is confident he can undo it and, based on how One Piece has been undoing deaths and tragedies like Saul and Vegapunk, there is a very big chance Lillith's assertation will come to fruition.
