9 Biggest Details Bob Marley: One Love Leaves Out About His True Story
Summary Bob Marley: One Love focuses on a specific period of time, leaving out important details and events from his life.
The movie briefly mentions Bob Marley's affairs while married to Rita, but doesn't explore the full extent or the numerous children he had with other women.
Bob Marley's childhood is not explored in depth, including the absence of his father and his step-father and half-siblings.
The true story of Bob Marley's life is depicted in Bob Marley: One Love, but the movie also leaves out several important details and events. The 2024 movie stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Jamaica's iconic reggae musician and primarily focuses on showing his life from 1976 to 1978. The movie uses Bob Marley's Smile Jamaica and One Love Peace Concert as the beginning and ending, as the rest of the movie follows the singer's life in the years between. There are also various flashbacks to Marley's past, ranging from meeting Rita to getting his first record deal or learning about Rastafari.
It is through this lens that Bob Marley: One Love's true story adaptation only covers a fraction of his life. The film elected to take a concentrated look at a smaller period of time instead of attempting to encapsulate his entire 36-year story in a roughly two-hour-long movie. That means that there are a lot of missing details about Bob Marley's life that either preceded the main narrative or followed Bob Marley: One Love's ending. There are also details relevant to his life from 1976 to 1978 that are left out, meaning the movie glosses over some rather important information.

10 Bob Marley's Affairs While Married To Rita (Including With Cindy Breakspeare)
Marley Had Multiple Other Relationships
Close
One part of Bob Marley's story largely missing from Bob Marley: One Love is the affairs he had with other women while married to Rita. The film briefly alludes to the fact that he is not remaining faithful to his wife, but the full extent of his affairs is not explored. The closest the movie comes is some brief appearances by Cindy Breakspeare, one of the women that Bob had a relationship with during his marriage and who he had a son with, Damian "Jr Gong" Marley.
It is unknown how many women Bob Marley had been with during his marriage, especially during the two years he spent in London. In real life, both Bob Marley and Rita had affairs and had children with other people. For Bob, this includes Pat Williams, Janet Hunt, Janet Bowen, Lucy Pounder, Yvette Crichton, and Cindy Breakspeare. However, despite the affairs, Bon and Rita remained in love until his death (via Style Caster).
9 Bob Marley Had More Children With Other Women
Bob had eleven children
Close
Bob Marley's affairs brought him many other children than the ones he had with Rita too. This is something that Bob Marley: One Love also only touches on with a quick piece of dialogue, failing to fully explore his multiple relationships. According to Bob Marley's website, he has six children he fathered with women other than Rita. He had five sons and one daughter through his relationships with Pat Williams, Janet Hunt, Janet Bowen, Lucy Pounder, Anita Belnavis, and Cindy Breakspeare.
All but the child with Cindy was conceived before Bob left Jamaica in 1976. There was also one other child, named Imani Carole Marley, who was born in 1963, but who is not listed or acknowledged on the official Bob Marley website. Also, Makeda Jahnesta Marley was born to Yvette Crichton in 1981, a few weeks after Bob died. However, she didn't grow up around any of her other half-siblings and lives now in Philadelphia.
There are other people who claim to be Bob Marley's children, such as the daughter of Yvette Crichton, but they are not acknowledged on Bob Marley's website.
8 Bob Marley's Father Died When He Was 10 Years Old
Norval Marley, his biological father
Close
Bob Marley: One Love does not spend much time exploring Bob's childhood, but his father is entirely absent from the film. This is because his biological father, Norval Marley, passed away when he was only 10 years old. Norval died when he was 70 years old in 1955 following a heart attack. Bob did not have much of a relationship with his dad before his passing, as Norval was away from the family often for work to provide financial support for Bob's mother, Cedella Malcolm.
Norval met Cedella in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica. They got married in 1945, which is the same year that Bob Marley was born. However, the couple ended up splitting up shortly after that because Morval was a White middle-aged plantation manager and Cedella was a Black teenager. Bob's mother doesn't have many good memories of her ex-husband either. “I would say Bob took after me. Yeah, I would say that,” she said (via PEOPLE). “Because most of his actions, is you know that Christianity way in him, I think he get all that from me. I’m sure.”
7 Bob Marley Had A Step-Father, Two Half-Brothers, & Two Half-Sisters
The family lived in Delaware instead of in Jamaica
Close
After Bob Marley's biological father passed away, his mother remarried. Cedella married Edward Booker and had two children with him in the years that followed. The fact that Bob had a step-father and two half-brothers, Richard and Anthony, is not included in Bob Marley: One Love. This could be because Edward Booker died in 1976 and the family lived in Delaware instead of in Jamaica.
Claudette Pearl is Bob's half-sister after his mom's relationship with Taddeus Livingston
Cedella also gave birth to two daughters over the years. Claudette Pearl is Bob's half-sister after his mom's relationship with Taddeus Livingston, while Constance Marley is his other half-sister from an unknown father. The movie mostly ignored much of this since it had little to do with the story at hand, which was about Bob's career, his marriage, and the legacy he left on the world. Focusing too much attention on family members would have slowed down the story.
6 The Smile Jamaica Concert Was Much Longer In Real-Life
12 songs were played
Close
The Smile Jamaica concert is included as a way to get some more songs in Bob Marley: One Love, but the film makes it seem as though it was a very short set list. Bob Marley & The Wailers are only shown and heard playing two songs, "War" and "So Jah S'eh." Both of these songs were on the official Smile Jamaica set list, but there were 12 songs played in reality. "War" was used to open up the concert, and "So Jah S'eh" was the closing number.
Bob Marley: One Love retains this order but leaves out the 10 songs that the band played in between them. There were several other popular songs that Bob Marley played in this concert, including "Crazy Baldhead," "Positive Vibration," "Trenchtown Rock," "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)," "Jah Live," and "Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock)." The songs couldn't have all been included, but the movie could have been edited to show there was more in between the two songs that were played.
5 Bob Marley Wrote The Kaya Album While In London
It was recorded in early 1977 and released in 1978
Close
Bob Marley: One Love leaves out another piece of Bob's musical journey by how it focuses on his pursuits in London. The movie primarily shows him and the band working on the Exodus album, with the movie directly showing Bob creating songs like "Exodus," "Jamming," and "Turn Your Lights Down Low." This all did happen, but the musician also created the Kaya album during a similar point in time.
It was recorded in early 1977 and released in 1978, meaning it happens over the exact time period that Bob Marley: One Love takes place, making the omission quite noticeable. The Kaya Album was released to coincide with the One Love Peace Concert, making it a pretty important part of Bob Marley's history. It heralded his return to Jamaica after his exile in London. The album also had some huge hit songs, including "Is This Love," "Sun is Shining," and "Satisfy My Soul."
4 How Bob Marley Dealt With His Toe Injury
He chose to deal with the injury
Close
Bob Marley's toe injury led to the discovery that he had cancer, and the movie briefly touches on how he doesn't want to follow the doctor's orders to amputate his toe. What Bob Marley: One Love leaves out from the true story is how he actually chose to deal with the injury. Instead of ignoring it completely or cutting off the toe, Bob elected to have the nail and nail bed completely removed. This was a malignant melanoma diagnosis, and that is the disease that ended up killing him in the end.
A skin graft taken from his thigh was then used to cover up where the nail used to be (via Jamaica Gleaner). "He exercised extreme caution during the healing process, and cared for the toe like a newborn infant," Cindy Breakspeare said. "He continued to tour, playing music to adoring fans all over the world; and there was a shortage of pictures with Bob with his foot bandaged, guitar in hand."
3 Bob Marley's Final Years Before His Death
Bob Marley still had a few more years to live after One Love Peace Concert
Close
Bob Marley: One Love ends at the One Love Peace Concert in 1978, but Bob Marley still had a few more years to live after this event. He spent time continuing to tour and create new music, including albums like Survival (a defiant and politically charged album) and Uprising (his final studio album and one that was religious in nature). As shown in Bob Marley: One Love's credits, he went to Africa in 1980 to celebrate Zimbabwe gaining its independence and performed there.
His Uprising Tour continued throughout 1980, leading up to his final concert performance coming in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 23, 1980. There was even an album released posthumously in 1983 called Confrontation, which featured several unreleased songs that Bob Marley made over his lifetime. This release included the song "Buffalo Soldier" as well as songs that were previously only available on releases in Jamaica.
2 How Bob Marley Died
Bob Marley died on May 11, 1981
Close
The very end of Bob Marley: One Love uses a title card to confirm that Bob Marley died on May 11, 1981, but the movie does not directly show or explain how he died. His diagnosis of cancer got worse over the years, resulting in Bob finding out the cancer had spread throughout his body, infecting his brain, lungs, and other vital organs. After attempting experimental treatment in Germany for eight months, he flew back to Jamaica, where his condition worsened.
His diagnosis with cancer got worse over the years
The plane had an emergency landing in Florida to get Bob medical attention, but he died shortly thereafter. One wonders if the cancer would have returned if he had amputated his toe, as his doctors suggested years before. His final words to his son Ziggy were, "On your way up, take me up. On your way down, don't let me down" (via LADbible).
1 The Most Accurate Parts Of One Love
While there were plenty of things that One Love left out about Bob Marley's life, there was a lot that the movie got right. As the movie showed, Marley's work and music were very controversial thanks to Jamaican politics when he rose to prominence. The assassination attempt on Marley played out as close as possible to what really happened. As the movie showed, Rita took a bullet to her head and ended up with a severe injury and Bob was shot twice. Shockingly, no one died in the attempt.
One Love also showed Marley's spiritual influences. The movie showed his upbringing in Jamaica and his introduction to the Rastafrian sect of the Abrahamic religion. This is all accurate and led to many of his beliefs and his steadfast delivery of his music and message. The movie also showed his close relationship with Chris Blackwell of Island Records (played in the movie by James Norton) and he was a big advocate of Marley in real life as well, helping him add his religious beliefs to the music package.
The movie also took an honest look at Bob Marley's faults in life. While it skipped over his cheating and fathering several children with other women, it did take a good look at the fact that Marley was not a perfect man. One Love showed his marital problems with Rita, and how they struggled to make it work. The movie showed how Marley took his life (and the lives of those around him) into his own hands when his touring became even more dangerous. In the end, the movie showed how Marley was a complex man.
