Netflix's ambitious science fiction series 3 Body Problem brings author Liu Cixin's heady ideas to the small screen in season 1, and now it will return for season 2. Based on Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past book series, 3 Body Problem tells the story of human scientists who must grapple with an imminent alien invasion that will take place 400 years in the future. Though alien invasion stories are as old as sci-fi itself, 3 Body Problem is a decidedly philosophical story that stretches the boundaries of the tech-centered genre.

Adapting Cixin's first novel, the eponymous The Three-Body Problem from 2008, Netflix's 3 Body Problem has been met with mixed reviews. Though many have been positive, and the overall consensus is fair, the series hasn't quite been the smashing critical success that Cixin's legendary trilogy has been. This didn't bode well for the big-budget streaming experiment, though the involvement of Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss gave it a leg to stand on. Netflix Renews The Show

Though it took a few months to finally arrive, the latest news confirms that Netflix has renewed 3 Body Problem for a second season. While little has been disclosed about the upcoming sophomore season, Netflix revealed its decision at the annual Upfront event and promised an "epic conclusion" to the series. This implies that season 2 will be the last, even though Cixin's original book series spanned a trilogy of novels.

A few months after season 1 debuted, Netflix opted to renew 3 Body Problem for a second season. The decision wasn't always a guarantee, and though the show performed well on the charts, 3 Body Problem's inflated budget put it on thin ice from the beginning. The streamer has promised an "epic conclusion" in season 2 which implies it will be the final season. However, Cixin's book series is composed of three books, and it will take a lot of rewriting to truncate the heady ideas that play out across books 2 and 3.

Despite the apocalyptic overtones of the series, the bulk of the cast of 3 Body Problem season 1 can return in the second season. The first season, which roughly followed the structure of the first book, introduced many of the larger ideas that will eventually be paid off later. This means that many of the major characters are necessary for season 2, and their season 1 arcs were merely the set-up to a much larger conclusion that will come further down the line.

The only characters who won't be back include Alex Sharp's Will Downing who was launched into space on a mission that went catastrophically awry, and Jonathan Pryce's Mike Evans who also met his fate. Likewise, the shocking death of Jack Rooney means fans shouldn't expect to see John Bradley in the cast of 3 Body Problem season 2.

Season 2 Will Likely Follow Liu Cixin's The Dark Forest

With a clear trilogy of books to work from, the second season of 3 Body Problem will likely draw from Liu Cixin's The Dark Forest. Like the first book, the title is derived from a theory, this time, the idea that the universe is filled with endless alien threats that cannot be detected, and humanity can't even grasp the full scope of what evil lurks around them. From a storyline perspective, season 2 will need to build upon the newly founded Wallfacers, and Saul is likely to be the main focus of the group.

As the name suggests, a much larger threat seems to be looming over the entire story, something that makes the danger much more immediate than the San-Ti's planned invasion that is nearly half a millennium away. If the location of Earth is revealed to the San-Ti, there are likely other hostile alien forces who are also now aware of the blue planet's whereabouts. Though nothing is certain, it's clear that 3 Body Problem season 1 was merely the precursor to something much larger.
