Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has earned the franchise its best opening weekend in ten years. The new movie is the fifth theatrical installment in the Monsterverse, which features new original human characters alongside monsters from the Japanese Godzilla franchise and the American King Kong franchise. Directed by Adam Wingard, it follows the titular titans as they must band together once again after defeating Mechagodzilla in 2021 when an even more powerful new threat emerges from the hollow earth.
Per Variety, the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire box office is now set to close out its domestic opening weekend with a 3-day total of $80 million. This hits the upper limit of its adjusted projections from Saturday, which were already significantly higher than its original $50 to $55 million range, earning the movie the second-best opening weekend of the Monsterverse franchise behind 2014's Godzilla ($93.2 million). By a hair, the new movie is also the second-best debut of 2024, behind Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million).
