Bad Boys 4 Is Breaking The Franchise's 29-Year Casting Tradition With 1 Character's Return
Summary Bad Boys 4 breaks tradition by recasting Marcus Burnett's wife, played by Tasha Smith instead of Theresa Randle.
Bringing back original actors like Bianca Bethune and Dennis Greene shows Bad Boys' commitment to its cast, making Randle's absence surprising.
Randle's stark decline in acting may have led to her replacement in Bad Boys 4.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die has ruptured a nearly three-decade Bad Boys tradition by recasting one of its longtime characters. Just as old as its staunch tradition is the franchise, which has been rendering the exploits of Miami detectives Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) for a combined 29 years in three incredibly lucrative movies, soon to include the upcoming fourth installment Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Marcus and Mike, loyal to one another and their loved ones since the franchise's start, are set to embark on another wild adventure - this time to clear their captain's name.
Per Bad Boys 4's trailer, Conrad Howard (Joe Pantoliano), who was captain since the first franchise movie but died at the end of Bad Boys for Life, is framed posthumously and accused of having worked with the cartels. Ever the devoted duo, Marcus and Mike rally to vindicate him; likewise, always the devoted franchise, Bad Boys brings back Pantoliano to reprise Captain Howard for retrospective scenes in Bad Boys 4. Bad Boys' loyalty to and among their cast of characters has become a franchise trademark, which is why the recent recasting of one veteran character comes as a complete surprise.

Bad Boys 4 Recast Marcus Burnett's Wife Instead Of Theresa Randle Returning
Marcus Burnett's Wife Will Be Played By Tasha Smith
Close
Shockingly, actress Theresa Randle will not be among the Bad Boys 4 cast despite her extensive history with the franchise. Recognized for her roles in movies such as Spawn, Space Jam, Malcolm X, and Beverly Hills Cop III, Randle is perhaps best known for playing the part of Marcus' wife, Theresa Burnett, in every Bad Boys movie until this upcoming installment. Reports have confirmed that actress Tasha Smith will take on the role of Marcus' wife but have not yet indicated why Bad Boys 4 replaced its original cast member.
Bad Boys has kept a consistent cast for three decades, so no matter how well Smith performs as Marcus' wife, she's susceptible to sticking out like a sore thumb among the original actors.
Smith certainly has the performance chops for the part, and her roles in titles like Why Did I Get Married?, Couples Retreat, and more can attest to her knack for dramatic and comedic acting. Though Smith is more than capable of giving an appreciable rendition of the character, her presence in the role is particularly shocking because the Bad Boys franchise has never recast a major character. Bad Boys has kept a consistent cast for three decades, so no matter how well Smith performs as Marcus' wife, she's susceptible to sticking out like a sore thumb among the original actors.

Bad Boys' History Makes Theresa Randle's Recasting Very Surprising
Bad Boys Always Brings Back Its Original Actors
Due to the franchise's impeccable casting history, it's surprising that Bad Boys 4 couldn't get Randle back to play Theresa. Bad Boys has not only been able to hold onto Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for nearly three decades but has habitually brought back original actors like Bianca Bethune and Dennis Greene. Playing Marcus' daughter Megan and her disfavored boyfriend (later husband) Reggie, Bethune and Greene have maintained their roles in Marcus' family and received great supporting character arcs since first being introduced in Bad Boys II.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die has not confirmed Bianca Bethune's return, though her character Megan has not been recast as Randle's Theresa has.
It's obvious the great lengths the franchise will go to for its cast and characters, shown well beyond a doubt with Bad Boys 4 creatively reviving Pantoliano's Captain Conrad. Bringing back Bethune and Greene for consistency is one thing, but having Pantoliano return even after his character's death proves that the Bad Boys franchise values its cast and characters and aims to nurture them until it frankly can't anymore. Randle's recast is a significant outlier in Bad Boy's history - however, it may be through no fault of the franchise's own.
Why Theresa Randle Isn't Returning For Bad Boys 4
Randle Seems To Be Mostly Retired From Acting
Randle has not been very active in either TV or film for a long while. The actress' last major role was in Bad Boys For Life in 2020, and before then, she hadn't acted in anything for ten years. Her most recent career performances before her reprisal in Bad Boys for Life were in 2010 in two relatively obscure productions, an experimental movie by independent filmmaker Cam Archer and a 25-minute short by Without A Trace series alum Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
Compared to her work in the 90s and early 2000s, in which she jumped from acting in a Seinfeld episode to starring in Spike Lee's Girl 6 to reprising her Bad Boys role, Randle's career in the past few decades has indicated that she's mostly retired from the spotlight. Moreover, Randle doesn't seem inclined to get back into the acting game, at least for now, as she has no future projects lined up. Because of this, her absence from Bad Boys 4's cast may not have been the franchise's fault but a result of her withdrawal from acting.
How Theresa Randle's Recasting Will Change Bad Boys 4
Randle's Casting Will Be Distracting But Won't Affect Bad Boys 4's Story
As a supporting character, Marcus' wife is unlikely to impact Bad Boys 4's story. Since the debut movie of the franchise, Marcus' family has been critical in helping ground Marcus and Mike's high-octane cases, whether with funny interjections of their day-to-day lives or with asides showcasing their important milestones. While they are essential to bringing Mike and Marcus back down to Earth in a well-needed respite from the dangers of the job, Marcus' family has never really been integral to the plots of the Bad Boys franchise's movies.
In light of this, Marcus' wife, no matter who the role is played by, will probably remain critical to comforting, comic relief, but not to Bad Boys 4's story. That said, Randle has been the face of Marcus' wife for so long that the change-up in actresses will undoubtedly be distracting. Once audiences get over the initial humps of Theresa Randle's absence and the significant break in the franchise's casting tradition, Bad Boys: Ride or Die will imaginably be another great Bad Boys movie.
