M. Night Shyamalan's Trap Footage Reveals A Major Twist Right Away At CinemaCon
Summary The first footage has screened from Trap, the upcoming thriller from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.
The footage features Josh Hartnett's character and his daughter attending a concert that is secretly a trap to catch a serial killer.
Hartnett's character is revealed to be the killer in question, giving away a major twist in the film.
Trap, the new movie from M. Night Shyamalan, has just debuted its first footage at CinemaCon. After the release of Old and Knock at the Cabin, Shyamalan is set to return to the thriller genre with Trap, an upcoming film that features Josh Hartnett in the starring role. The film is said to follow a father and daughter who attend a pop concert only to find that they've inadvertently put themselves into the middle of a sinister event.
With the Trap release date still a few months away, Warner Bros. has now screened the first footage from the movie at CinemaCon, for which Screen Rant is in attendance. The footage starts with Hartnett's character and his daughter attending a Lady Raven concert, before he heads off for the restroom. Upon noticing that there is a heavy police presence, Hartnett's character finds out from a fellow attendee that the concert is a trap to catch a serial killer. The big twist is that Hartnett is the serial killer, and it's revealed on his phone that he's holding a victim hostage. The clip ends with Hartnett laughing manically.
Trap Sounds Like A Classic M. Night Shyamalan Thriller
Will The Movie Have A Second Twist?
Close
Shyamalan frequently operates in the thriller genre, and most of his movies have one thing in common: there's always a twist. The footage for Trap would suggest that the upcoming film will very much be continuing this trend, though it's curious that the footage seemingly gives away the big twist. While plot synopses have suggested that Hartnett is the film's protagonist, it's an interesting choice to make the main character a serial killer that apparently chops up his victims.
Knock at the Cabin ends with a surprise twist that is teased throughout the movie, further speaking to Shyamalan's love of pulling the rug out from under audiences.
The fact that this twist has been given away could suggest that Trap will actually have another big twist at some point throughout its runtime. It remains to be seen what this twist will be, but it could be challenging to make audiences root for a serial killer. The Trap cast also features Vanessa Smythe and Saleka Shyamalan, among others, and it's possible that one of these figures will become the main source of empathy for audiences as Hartnett's character's true colors are revealed.
Saleka Shyamalan is a singer/ songwriter who has contributed to the soundtracks for her father's projects like Old and Servant.
In addition to surprising twists, Shyamalan movies like Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense, The Village, Split, Old and more also have tense atmospheres with some truly shocking scenes. Even with the twist having been given away so early, Trap can still deliver on this front, especially if Hartnett's character is violent and unpredictable; everyone at the concert becomes a possible victim. Many questions remain about Trap, but hopefully a trailer is released in the coming weeks providing a better idea of what's to come.
