The couple navigates new challenges as they face increased pressure and spotlight in their respective careers.

Spencer and Olivia recently reunited in the All American season 6 premiere, but both characters changed during Olivia's time away in London and their relationship will be tested. The couple briefly reunited in the All American season 5 finale at the airport before Olivia went to study abroad in London, but so many things were left unsaid. Spencer and Olivia broke up at the beginning of season 5 when Olivia wrote an article exposing a scandal involving Spencer's football coach, Ivan Garrett. While they remained close, their career aspirations deepened, and Olivia went to study journalism in London.

Both Spencer and Olivia were naive, thinking their relationship could remain the same after a year apart, though neither initially wanted to admit it. When Olivia reveals that both the new and old versions of herself are in love with Spencer, her vulnerability and growth are one of the reasons Spencer and Olivia need to get back together. Both Olivia and Spencer had more time to figure out their future goals and who they were on their own, and now they need to decipher if that future includes each other as their love evolves.

All American Season 6 Will Show How Spencer & Olivia's Year Apart Changed Them

Olivia Grew Up While In London

Close

Olivia returned from London after 15 months in the All American season premiere. While Spencer seemed hurt initially, the time apart allowed him to focus on having fun on the football field again. He didn't need to divide his time between football pressure and seeing his girlfriend, while Olivia wasn't torn between her journalism integrity and Spencer. All American stars Daniel Ezra and Samantha Logan stated that Olivia's stay in London will affect them because they have matured and approach their romantic relationship differently:

Daniel Ezra: Spencer and Olivia… they’ve had [a certain] amount of time apart that changes both of them. They’ve been on separate continents… So what we’re gonna kick off with is the two of them realizing just how much they’ve changed… and what this new version of Spencer and Olivia looks like… Some really powerful stuff to play with, some really adult things to dive into, which was exciting. [And] new pressure on what the future holds for them. Samantha Logan: I’m gonna agree with all of that. The season’s been really fun because we’ve been wanting to see Olivia and Spencer together for a really long time, and it seemed like there was always something getting in the way. [This season they’re] just really coming together in new versions of themselves and… there’s going to be some stuff going on between, but ultimately we’re gonna see their relationship really transform into something we haven’t seen before in a really beautiful way.

Spencer has more difficulty with the changes since he was the one left behind, and he feels hurt that Olivia also considers London her home. Now that Olivia has lived independently away from him, her family, and her friends, she has started making life decisions without consulting anyone. Instead of one of them chasing and rescuing the other, this puts them on more equal footing, though Spencer will have to get used to the new normal.

Last Time Spencer & Olivia Focused On Their Careers, It Almost Destroyed Them

Spencer and Olivia broke up over her controversial article.

When Spencer and Olivia started college at Golden Angeles University, they were so busy getting acclimated to college life that they barely spent time together. Spencer strived to find his place on the football team, while Olivia earned a journalism internship and tried to be known for more than fluff pieces. However, for Olivia to succeed, she dug into why Coach Garrett had his players intentionally injure the other team, which interfered with Spencer's career goals. Spencer and Olivia broke up because he loved Olivia enough to want her to follow her dreams more.

The duo appears to have matured since then and communicate their differences better. Even though they were initially naive to assume nothing would change, at least they discussed their separation immediately and still love each other. Hopefully, they've learned from their mistakes as the media puts more pressure on Spencer than ever, and Olivia will be in the spotlight, too, when she writes a biography about Billy. They'll need to turn to each other and not push one another away.
