The Girls On The Bus Episode 6 Recap: 10 Biggest Reveals
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Girls on the Bus episode 6.
Summary The Girls on the Bus episode 6 took a different approach without the candidates, focusing on the journalists' relationships and personal issues.
Sadie and Grace found a lead in a major story about Walker's donors.
Tensions arose as the bus broke down on the way to the debate, leading to chaos, revelations, and a potential pregnancy for Sadie.
The Girls on the Bus has surpassed its halfway point in the season with episode 6, which followed a slightly different format from previous episodes. The Girls on the Bus is based on the book Chasing Hillary by the show’s co-creator Amy Chozick. The 2018 memoir chronicles Chozick’s time on Hillary Clinton’s bus during the 2008 and 2016 presidential elections. Additionally, The Girls on the Bus is inspired by The Boys on the Bus, meaning the political drama spends a good amount of time focusing on the race, candidates, and the involvement of the journalists.
However, with The Girls on the Bus characters unable to make a stop along the campaign trail, the episode took on a different tone and focus. Thus far, The Girls on the Bus has done a good job balancing the four female journalists’ personal and professional stories, fleshing out each of the characters inside and outside of work. Without the candidates in The Girls on the Bus episode 6, viewers saw the journalists spend more time with each other, highlighting both their differences and similarities.

10 Sadie & Grace Found A Lead
Sadie & Grace made headway in their story
Close
At the end of The Girls on the Bus episode 5, Sadie and Grace decided to team up to follow what could be a major investigative story into Walker’s donors after Sadie received a series of anonymous tips. With Walker having won the South Carolina primary, bringing her one step closer to earning the Democratic nomination, the story seems even more pressing. Fortunately, Sadie and Grace were able to find a potential lead in The Girls on the Bus episode 6.
With Walker having fired many of her employees in The Girls on the Bus episode 5, Grace and Sadie started looking into connections between her donors and now ex-staff members. They discovered that Missy Monroe, a videographer Walker had fired, received a scholarship from a non-profit where Walker was also on the board of directors. Their discovery could mean Novak, who founded the non-profit and donated $20 million to Walker’s super PAC, is one of her supposedly shady donors.
9 Sadies Was Trying To Ignore Loafers
Sadie can’t go through Loafers officially for quotes
Close
Finding out more about Walker’s super PAC became more difficult when Sadie confessed her relationship with Loafers to Bruce and The Sentinel. While she was able to keep her job, Sadie isn’t allowed to go through Loafers officially for quotes the way she’s been doing in The Girls on the Bus. Though she could go through Benji, Walker’s new head of communications, he is notoriously tight-lipped and is much less helpful than Loafers has been.
Initially, Loafers was upset and confused by Sadie going to Benji instead of him, as he felt it made him look bad in front of his boss. Sadie confessed to Loafers that Bruce and The Sentinel knew about them, and Loafers became more understanding of her situation. Sadie was still upset by what happened and Loafers apologized and agreed to give her all the space she needed. However, that proved easier said than done when Loafers was put on Walker’s bus with the journalists.
8 Kimberlyn Asked Grace For Advice
Grace told Kimberlyn to put herself first
Close
Grace is by far the most experienced journalist on the campaign trail in The Girls on the Bus and has taken on a sort of mentor role to those younger and less experienced than her, particularly Sadie. Recognizing this, Kimberlyn buttered Grace up and then asked for her advice as she looked to leverage the recent success she’s had with Liberty Direct News. The first piece of advice Grace gave Kimberlyn was that she needed to trust her instinct and trust people, not corporations.
Grace reminded Kimberlyn that Liberty Direct News needed her more than she needed them. When Kimberlyn said she valued loyalty, Grace told her that she only had to be loyal to two things as a journalist: the truth and your sources. This might not have been the advice Kimberlyn expected to get from Grace, but it gave her much to think about in terms of her career and next steps in The Girls on the Bus.
7 The Bus Broke Down
The journalists were on their way to the debate
Close
While the previous five episodes of The Girls on the Bus focused on different Democratic primaries, episode 6 was supposed to be all about the first debate of the campaign. Lola saw this as a big opportunity for everyone to fall in love with her longshot “freshman” candidate, but Grace told her that nothing important ever happens at the debates, and they don't impact voters. Especially unfortunate for Kimberlyn, who was set to have a big TV spot with Liberty Direct News during the debate, their bus broke down in the middle of nowhere.
With the debate in two hours and no help in sight, the journalists and other occupants on the bus had no choice but to sit and wait. This led the four main characters to hold their own debates, as they shared their different opinions on hot-button topics, including feminism and the state of modern journalism. The bus breaking down saw The Girls on the Bus episode 6 take on many qualities of a typical bottle episode, including diving into the characters and their motivations.
6 Loafers Told Sadie He Was In Love With Her
Sadie broke Loafers’ heart
Close
Perhaps the character most stressed about the bus breaking down in The Girls on the Bus episode 6 was the one who usually wouldn’t have been on it: Loafers. While some characters accepted their fate and gave up on ever making it to the debate, Loafers pushed the bus driver to try and find some way to salvage their trip. With the heightened emotions of being stranded, Loafers was finally able to confront Sadie and tell her the truth about his feelings for her.
Loafers called Sadie out for ghosting him, never taking accountability for her behavior, and being “emotionally distant and deflective.” Loafers claimed Sadie hadn’t grown in the past three years, and when Sadie pointed out that in the past she would have never told him about what happened in New York, she wouldn’t admit why she’d told him this time around. When Loafers confessed he was in love with Sadie even though she broke his heart, Sadie didn’t have a proper response, proving Loafers right about Sadie and her emotional issues.
5 The Bus Turned Into Chaos
The journalists turned a missed opportunity into a party
Close
Though the characters weren’t stranded for long in The Girls on the Bus, tensions quickly arose. Lola spent the episode desperate to find Wi-Fi while Kimberlyn held on to the hope that she might be able to make the debate in time to get her big TV spot. When it became clear they wouldn’t make it, Kimberlyn decided to try and set up a camera outside, only to learn that her Liberty Direct News colleague Gary had called the network and given up their spot.
Kimberlyn accused Gary of trying to sabotage her career, while Gary accused Kimberlyn of leaving the network with dead air by not calling herself. Things quickly turned ugly between them, and Grace only made the scene more chaotic by stealing someone’s sandwiches and handing them out freely to everyone. With nowhere else to go, the bus occupants threw their own party, complete with strip poker, whipped cream, and alcohol.
4 Lola & Kimberlyn Bonded Over Not Being Satisfied
Lola & Kimberlyn had issues with their respective jobs
Close
After the fight with Gary on the bus, Kimberlyn found herself having a deep conversation with Lola. Despite their differences, Lola and Kimberlyn have developed a unique relationship in The Girls on the Bus, starting with the last time they were stranded in the middle of nowhere. During the argument, Gary accused Kimberlyn of hating Liberty Direct News and only caring about herself. Between their fight and her talk with Grace, Kimberlyn was forced to confront her true feelings about her network.
Kimberlyn eventually told Lola that she hated the theatrics and conspiracy theories at Liberty Direct News and acknowledged that the network “just isn’t [her].” When Lola suggested she go somewhere else, Kimberlyn said she’d be an outlier wherever she went. Lola related to Kimberlyn’s struggle, as she made her money through sponsorships but secretly hated doing them. Through being on the bus, Lola realized that she didn’t care about the “fluffy parts” of influencing the way she cared about journalism.
3 Lola’s Management Dropped Her
Lola wasn’t posting enough
Close
At the start of The Girls on the Bus episode 6, Lola found herself in trouble with her management for not posting enough ads on her social media. The problem only grew when the bus got stuck, as she was left without Wi-Fi for most of the time they were on the bus. Getting stranded also came at the worst possible time, as it happened immediately after she posted a controversial video in which she said she hated “black ice” that became misconstrued when the captions instead read “Black guys.”
Though Lola had admitted to Kimberlyn that she hated doing sponsorships, she still needed them to make money and stay on the bus. So, when Lola’s management decided to drop her for the “black ice” issue and her lack of posting, she was left unsure of what to do next. Without her management, Lola will have to figure out a way to lean into the news more the way she wants while keeping her sponsors happy, something that will likely prove difficult for her in The Girls on the Bus.
2 Grace & Charlie Argued About Annie Dropping Out
Charlie was disappointed in Grace
Close
Annie hasn’t appeared in The Girls on the Bus since she decided to drop out of college following her suspension and argument with Grace. Though Grace was disappointed in her daughter, who hadn’t contacted her and was spending quite a bit of money on food delivery apps, she had faith she’d figure things out. Grace also hadn’t spoken to her husband Charlie about the situation, assuming it would be better if he heard the news directly from Annie.
Grace was proven wrong in The Girls on the Bus episode 6 when Charlie finally spoke to Annie and learned that she was traveling with her drug-dealing boyfriend and looking to find herself. While he was concerned, Grace once again took a hands-off approach, trusting their daughter. Charlie then blamed the situation on Grace, claiming he’d taken on most of the parenting responsibilities as she grew up, and when it was finally time for Grace to step up, she dropped the ball. Charlie then told Grace to leave, unable to stand her at that moment.
1 Sadie Could Be Pregnant
Sadie’s period was late
Close
At the end of The Girls on the Bus episode 6, Lola came to Sadie’s room and asked for a tampon, explaining that Kimberlyn was all out. Lola then made a seemingly innocent comment about all their cycles having linked up, but it led to a potentially disastrous realization for Sadie. When she checked her phone, Sadie cursed when she saw that her period was eight days late. Following Sadie’s ill-advised hookup with Loafers a few episodes ago, it can be assumed that if Sadie is pregnant, it’s with Loafers' baby.
With Sadie on Walker’s bus and trying not to let her past relationship with Loafers affect her work, her being pregnant with his baby would certainly complicate things. After their talk outside the bus, Loafers made an excuse to Benji as to why Sadie couldn’t go through him for quotes anymore, showing that he wasn’t holding a grudge against her like he easily could have. Even if Sadie and Loafers end up on good terms again, Sadie being pregnant could change everything for her and her career in The Girls on the Bus.
