Minecraft Movie Filming Wrap Announced By Jason Momoa In Joyous BTS Image

Summary Minercraft movie star Jason Momoa confirms that filming on the adaptation has now wrapped in New Zealand.

The movie is directed by Jared Hess and also stars Jack Black, Emma Myers, and more.

Minecraft is unlikely to match the success of The Super Marios Bros. Movie, but it could be a hit due to its cast and if it can recreate the world of the Minecraft games on screen.

The Minecraft movie has now wrapped filming, as confirmed with a new Jason Momoa behind-the-scenes image. Directed by Jared Hess, the upcoming film is an adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name. The Minecraft movie cast also includes Jack Black, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement, with filming having seemingly started earlier this year.

Now as the Minecraft movie's 2025 release date inches closer, Momoa shares a new image on Instagram confirming that filming has now concluded on the upcoming adaptation. Check out his post below:

"MINECRAFT WE ARE WRAPPING," he writes in his caption. "All my aloha to my crew and cast," he continues, calling the filming an "unbelievable movie experience" and "one of the greatest times of my life." Momoa also praises the country of New Zealand for serving as the main location where filming took place.

Will The Minecraft Movie Repeat Super Mario Bros. Movie's Success?

Why Topping Illumination's Animated Movie Will Be A Challenge

While video game adaptations had long been considered somewhat cursed, with few actually ending up being critical or commercial successes in the 2000s and mid-2010s, the last few years have seen a change in this regard. Undoubtedly the biggest video game adaptation success, at least in terms of box office, came last year with Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Although the Super Mario Bros. Movie critic reviews were mixed, the film ended its theatrical run with $1.36 billion.

One major difference between The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Minecraft is that the former is animated while the latter will be in live-action. The fact that the former film was animated likely contributed to its success, with more families with young children going to see it. Minecraft, however, could still end up being a success due to the popularity of its video game source material if its brought to life in live-action in a compelling and faithful way.

In an interview with Screen Rant in February, producer Jon Berg teased that Minecraft is a "big Warner Bros. spectacular," and that "it's going to be true to the game."

What's more, Black has become something of a star with younger audiences. The actor played Bowser as part of the cast of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and his song from the film, "Peaches," actually went on to be a major hit outside the movie. Black's starring role in the movie could end up being a considerable draw in itself. It seems unlikely that Minecraft will top The Super Mario Bros. Movie at the box office, but it does seem poised to be a hit.
