"Not the World's Greatest Detective": Batman Loses His Iconic Nickname to an Even Older DC Hero

Summary Jimmy Olsen outshines Batman as the "World's Greatest Detective" by uncovering a tricky illusion created by magical imps in a superhero incident.

Despite doubts from Supergirl, Batman claims credit for Jimmy's detective work, showcasing his defensive nature over his title within the superhero group.

DC is propelling Jimmy Olsen into the spotlight through various projects, indicating his significant presence across comics, animated TV shows, and upcoming movies.

Sorry, Batman, but it seems Jimmy Olsen may have overtaken The Dark Knight's role as the "World’s Greatest Detective" by unraveling a mystery that even the collective intellects of Superman, Robin, and Batman couldn’t crack. In addition to Jimmy's newfound detective prowess, it looks like DC is putting the investigative photographer back into the spotlight in various Superman-centric projects.

Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #13 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora kicks off with the aftermath of a Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk incident. In this incident, the two fifth-dimensional imps had been impersonating Batgirl and Supergirl, successfully tricking Batman, Superman, and Robin.

Both Kara and Barbara are equally surprised and confused that the imps managed to deceive Batman with his renowned detective skills and Superman with his super senses. Astonishingly, the only person not fooled by the imps' antics was Jimmy, thanks to his trusty camera.

DC is actively spotlighting Jimmy Olsen in various major projects across different creative mediums, including comics, animated TV shows, and movies.

The Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen Replaces Batman as World’s Great Detective

Superman discloses that the magical illusions created by the imps were directly linked to their minds, causing them to perceive Batgirl and Supergirl instead of the imps. However, it was Jimmy’s camera that enabled them to see through the illusions and discern the truth. By capturing a photo, Jimmy unveiled the imps instead of the two heroines, breaking the illusion's hold. Upon learning that Jimmy was the one who ultimately unraveled the trick, Supergirl gives Batman a sidelong glance and remarks, “Not the World’s Greatest Detective,” implying doubts about Bruce's deserving of that title.

Jimmy Olsen first debuted (though unnamed) in 1938's Action Comics #6 by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Paul Lauretta, nearly a year before Batman's debut in Detective Comics #27.

However, Batman swiftly defends his claim to the World’s Greatest Detective title in response to Supergirl's skepticism with a simple, "Who do you think suggested he take the picture?" This adds a humorous twist to the situation, with Batman appearing somewhat defensive, as if genuinely feeling his title is threatened by Daily Planet photojournalist Jimmy Olsen. Jimmy, on the other hand, seems content just to be part of the group dynamics, showing no desire to lay claim to Batman’s title for himself.

DC Is Putting Jimmy Olsen Back in the Spotlight in Comics, TV, and Movies!

While Jimmy may still have a long way to go before claiming the World’s Greatest Detective title for himself, that doesn’t mean he won’t be a significant presence in the DCU through other avenues. DC is actively spotlighting Jimmy Olsen in various major projects across different creative mediums, including comics, animated TV shows, and movies. On the comic side of things, Jimmy continues to be a recurring character in Mark Waid’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest run.

Moreover, the photojournalist plays a central role in the animated series My Adventures with Superman, which will be receiving its own comic adaptation starting June 4, 2024. Jimmy is also poised to be one of the key characters in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy (2025) movie. With such diverse projects on his plate, Jimmy Olsen has plenty to keep him busy without needing to vie for Batman’s World’s Greatest Detective title.
