Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance marks a major return for the most recent game in the SMT franchise, and there's a lot to know about its upcoming release and how it differs from the original SMT 5. Although the game was originally released as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, SMT 5: Vengeance is bringing it to a wide suite of modern platforms, ensuring that a lot more people will be able to access the title than ever before. It's also adding some major content additions, so it could be worth the double-dip for die-hard fans.
Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance tells the story of a high-school student who ends up in a dying world in the midst of a war between angels and demons. In line with the traditionally operatic fashion of the JRPG series, it's revealed that the creator god, leaving a power vacuum that will inevitably end up filled by whoever is capable of seizing it. The protagonist takes on a central role in this conflict as someone eligible to rise to the throne, offering some major choices and memorable fates for the player to seek out.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance Gameplay
What To Expect From The Upcoming Release & New Content From The Original
Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance relies on the long-standing staple elements of SMT gameplay, most notably in the unusual approach that the games take to the demons that litter the world. Rather than simply eliminating every enemy in combat, it's possible to recruit, level, and fuse demons to use for the protagonist's purposes. It also maintains the SMT standard for a challenging difficulty level, although it's more approachable than the hardest entries in the franchise.
Vengeance is receiving some major upgrades from the original release in everything from gameplay mechanics to story, with a lot of focus on additional quality-of-life features. One particularly notable addition is an array of 40 new demons, which brings the total to 274 (assisted by the inclusion of previous DLC for SMT 5). The biggest changes come in the form of a second route for the game called "Canon of Vengeance," which diverges as the game progresses and ultimately results in a completely different outcome.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance Pre-Order Details
Which Edition Includes Which Features?
Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance can be pre-ordered in four different editions, with options for both digital and physical bonuses. Pre-orders for the Digital Standard Edition, Digital Deluxe, or physical Launch Edition will come with the "2 Sacred Treasure Sets" DLC, which offer advantages that can be re-used across battles. The "Gleam Grenade" deals damage to foes, while the "Haraedo Bead" provides some healing for all allies.
For the price of $69.99, a bump from the $59.99 MSRP of all other versions, the Digital Deluxe Edition also comes a couple of additional subquests and several DLC buffs that increase the spawn rate of some useful demons. For physical fans, the Launch Edition leaves out the Digital Deluxe bonuses but comes with an exclusive Steelbook at no additional cost. The standard physical edition lacks the pre-order incentive DLC, so there's no good reason to buy it at launch aside from a burning hatred for Steelbooks.

For anyone who's already played the original version of SMT 5, Vengeance doesn't offer any discount or full save file transfer, but it's possible to carry three demons across Compendiums if both copies are on Switch. For everyone else, unless something goes wrong, Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance is looking like the new definitive way to experience the game for the first time.
