The movie Argylle is an interesting new take on spy movies, but it still has plenty of brilliant fight scenes and action sequences. In another movie from director Matthew Vaughn, Argylle stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway, the author of the Argylle novels, who finds that her fictional creations are actually real. Along the way, she meets real-life spy Aidan Wilde (Sam Rockwell), who helps her discover her past memories as Rachel Kylle. Throughout the film, the two face multiple big threats, which results in some great and dramatic moments.
Although reviews for Argylle from critics are mixed in opinion, it still has some brilliant fights between the spies and the villainous organization, the Division. Argylle's ending brings Elly's story to a close, but she walks away relatively unscathed, which is impressive considering the trauma and shocking violence she experiences throughout the film. From start to finish, Argylle is filled with dramatic, exciting, and action-packed events that audiences of all ages can enjoy.

9 Agent Argylle's Introduction
The World Meets Elly Conway's Fictional Spy
Close
In the opening scenes of Argylle, the fictional Agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) is introduced to the audience. Shortly after meeting and dancing with the beautiful and manipulative LaGrange (Dua Lipa), he chases the bombshell through the picturesque landscape in Greece, causing plenty of destruction as he goes. LaGrange rushes off on a motorcycle, with Argylle following in a car in an attempt to capture her. During this scene, Argylle flies across multiple rooftops and even down a flight of stairs, startling locals as he goes.
However, this action-packed sequence has a happy ending, with Wyatt (John Cena) amazingly grabbing LaGrange off her motorcycle as she speeds past.
LaGrange also does the same and, at one point, even rides the motorcycle through a family's living room. This scene feels like something out of a James Bond movie, with the handsome leading man chasing down a villain while failing to acknowledge the damage that he's causing. However, this action-packed sequence has a happy ending, with Wyatt (John Cena) amazingly grabbing LaGrange off her motorcycle as she speeds past, impressively holding the woman up in the air with one hand.

8 Train Ambush
Elly Meets Aidan In A Dramatic Fashion
Close
When on her way to visit her parents, Elly meets Aidan for the first time. Initially, she is cautious of the man, especially because of his raggedy appearance and how he speaks to her in such a confident manner. However, she quickly discovers that he is her savior as a full-blown raging fight breaks out on the train. This scene shows how Elly views the world brilliantly, with split-second jumps between Aidan and Agent Argylle appearing on-screen and fighting off a horde of bad guys who are after her.
It's worth noting Sam Rockwell's strong comedic performance in this scene, too.
It's worth noting Sam Rockwell's strong comedic performance in this scene, too. Despite several men trying to kill him every few seconds, Aidan remains cool and collected but still provides little quips and sarcastic comments as he fights. Although Aidan doesn't have the same physical appearance as Argylle, he proves that he has the same instincts and reflexes as the super spy. The scene's intense climax also sets up the tone for the rest of the movie, with Elly forcing herself to trust Aidan and jumping out of the train with him, parachuting to safety.
7 Elly And Aidan's Double Fight
Two Spies, Two Fights, One After The Other
Close
In two brief, back-to-back scenes in Argylle, both Elly and Aidan have their respective fights with the Division. After being shot by Elly, Aidan wakes up and attempts to escape his capture, guarded by two men and tied to a chair. With one swift motion, Aidan swings the chair around and uses it as a weapon, knocking one guard out cold. However, in a funny but dramatic moment, the second guard gets choked by Aidan, who pushes the chair onto his throat.
This scene also proves just how intelligent Elly is, both as herself and Rachel Kylle, and how, ultimately, her morals conquer everything else.
Moments later, Elly reveals to Director Ritter (Bryan Cranston) and Dr. Margaret Vogeler (Catherine O'Hara) that she has fooled them and hacked their system. Before they can respond, Elly quickly and effortlessly attacks them both before heading off in search of Aidan. These moments brilliantly show the similarities between the two characters, as well as how much they both grow throughout the film. This scene also proves just how intelligent Elly is, both as herself and Rachel Kylle, and how, ultimately, her morals conquer everything else.
6 Alfie The Cat Attacks Ritter
Elly's Pet Saves The Day
Close
Elly's beloved cat, Alfie, provides some of the funniest moments in Argylle. One notable example of this is when he attacks Director Ritter while Elly and Aidan try to transmit the Masterkey to their mentor, Alfie Solomon (Samuel L. Jackson). Although this is only a brief scene in Argylle, it is both hilarious and tense all at the same time. In the lead-up, Elly and Aidan have already faced several big battles with Ritter's men, which leads the Director of the Division to hold the two at gunpoint.
Because Alfie spends most of Argylle tucked away in his backpack, it's easy to forget that he's there.
Ironically, Elly and Aidan need Ritter's eyes for the system's retina scan. However, Alfie the Cat has other ideas and chooses to attack Ritter and claw at his eyes. Because Alfie spends most of Argylle tucked away in his backpack, it's easy to forget that he's there. This is why his sudden attack, which gives Elly and Aidan a solution to how they'll escape death, is so good. This is an interesting and inventive way for the writers to give this scene a comedic twist, but it also gives Aidan and Elly a new problem to face.

5 Twist And Crush
Aidan Shows Elly What It Means To Be A Spy
Close
The "twist and crush" scene is also crucial to Elly's character development. At this point in the movie, the anxious writer is still unaware of her true identity as Rachel Kylle, which makes the constant threats to her life more difficult for Aidan to deal with, and this action-packed fight sequence is a non-stop rollercoaster ride from start to finish. After discovering the hideout of the hacker in London, Aidan and Elly are ambushed by another group of armed men, leaving them to fight their way out. This scene gets incredibly tense in a few key moments.
Although Elly tries her best to go through with the "twist and crush" and stomp her foot into one of the guard's heads, it shows that her underlying training is more present than she realizes.
For example, when the two hide under the floorboards to avoid being seen, or when Elly finds herself holding the bomb, only to throw it back across the room and towards Aidan. Across a flurry of bullets, the two manage to get out of the abandoned apartment but are met with even more attackers. Although Elly tries her best to go through with the "twist and crush" and stomp her foot into one of the guard's heads, it shows that her underlying training is more present than she realizes, which is helpful later on in the film.
4 Jumping From The Roof
Aidan And Elly's Hilarious And Scary Escape
Close
After leaving the hacker Bakunin's hideout, Elly and Aidan escape to the building's roof. With more goons on their trail, the two realize that Bakunin has set up his own escape plan, with a boat waiting in the river below them. Elly panics, unsure of how they will be able to get down, but Aidan's training doesn't hesitate to tell him that they need to jump off the roof to safety. In an attempt to get Elly to trust that the descent is safe for them, he takes Alfie the Cat and throws him over the edge.
Alfie's reaction as he falls is ridiculously funny, but as the old wives' tale goes: cats always land on their feet.
Alfie's reaction as he falls is ridiculously funny, but as the old wives' tale goes: cats always land on their feet. What makes this scene even funnier, albeit stressful, is when Elly and Aidan jump after him. Failing to realize that gravity comes into play, poor Alfie is catapulted back into the air, with audiences holding their breath in concern over whether the feline would be okay or not. Luckily, Aidan catches Alfie, which is a rather sweet moment, considering the spy makes it clear throughout Argylle that he's not a big fan of the cat.

3 Aidan And Elly's Final Fight
Argylle's Climax Is Tense But Captivating
Close
In the climax of Argylle, Aidan and Elly are finally able to send Alfie Solomon the Masterkey, but not without one last attempt at sabotage from Vogeler. For years, Vogeler was posing as Elly's mother, Ruth. So, when Vogeler realizes that Elly is close to completing the transmission, she uses a ballerina music box as a mental trigger code to force her into attacking Aidan. This scene truly delves into the details of Aidan and Elly's past relationship, with Aidan admitting that he loves Elly, regardless of her trying to kill him.
Although the fight is nerve-wracking, especially as it's unknown whether either will survive, the backdrop of the ocean as the two battle on the boat's deck is simply beautiful and adds to the tenseness of the situation.
The cinematography in this scene is also incredibly strong. Although the fight is nerve-wracking, especially as it's unknown whether either will survive, the backdrop of the ocean as the two battle on the boat's deck is simply beautiful and adds to the tenseness of the situation. Amazingly, Voegeler's manipulation is brought to a dramatic end with Kiera (Ariana DeBose) killing the woman, which is a brilliant way to bring the character in right at the end of the film. Because of Kiera, Elly and Aidan are able to sail away into the sunset, quite literally, and get their happy ending.

2 Oil Ice Skating
Elly Conway's Life As Rachel Kylle Comes In Handy
Close
One of Argylle's biggest and most choreographed fight scenes comes during Aidan and Elly's revenge on the Division. After escaping a wave of Ritter's men, the two are cornered by Carlos (Tomás Paredes) in an area of the Division facility filled with oil tanks. Because of the sheer number of bullets from both sides, the oil begins to leak across the floor, making the area extremely dangerous. With the tiniest spark, the entire facility will explode, which raises the stakes for both parties.
Not only is Elly inventive, creating makeshift skates by stabbing knives into her soles, but she also moves flawlessly across the oil and around the room, brutally taking down each and every one of the remaining members of the Division in a stellar, action-packed sequence.
Even Carlos and the Division's men realize this, which results in them swapping out their guns for knives instead. Although it appears that there's no end in sight, Elly is able to use her past memories to get her and Aidan out of trouble. Bryce Dallas Howard gives an amazing performance in this scene. Not only is Elly inventive, creating makeshift skates by stabbing knives into her soles, but she also moves flawlessly across the oil and around the room, brutally taking down each and every one of the remaining members of the Division in a stellar, action-packed sequence.
1 Multi-colored Smoke Shootout
Elly And Aidan's Revenge On Division
Close
There are plenty of interesting, tense, and amazingly shot fight scenes in Argylle, but the smoke shootout in the Division facility is easily the best. Initially, it appears that Aidan and Elly have no hope against the group of soldiers standing outside the door of the armory until Elly uses her brilliant brain to figure out a solution. Taking inspiration from earlier in the film, when she holds the bomb in Bakunin's hideout, Elly chucks out a pinned grenade into the hall. However, rather than there being a deathly explosion, the air fills with gorgeous blue, red, and yellow smoke.
This is another scene in Argylle that receives specific praise for its cinematography.
This is another scene in Argylle that receives specific praise for its cinematography. The combination of the blurred, colorful smoke and the pair's perfectly timed choreography is immaculate, although funny, considering the context of the situation. This moment is also scored with the song "Run" by Leona Lewis, and although an odd choice for the Argylle soundtrack, it's also a great reflection of their relationship. The two work in complete sync to take out the guards, and because of the incredible display playing out in front of them, many don't realize what is heading toward them until it's too late.
