Netflix’s Sweet Home Replacement Gives Its Protagonist The Happy Ending Song Kang’s Hyun-su May Never Get
WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Parasyte: The Grey
Summary Su-in from Parasyte: The Grey, who shares a lot of similarities with Sweet Home's Hyun-su, finds a happy ending living with her parasite.
Hyun-su in Sweet Home deals with a malevolent monster alter wanting control.
Hyun-su deserves a happy ending similar to what Su-in got in Parasyte: The Grey
Parasyte: The Grey is Netflix’s perfect show to watch after Sweet Home, and the latest horror K-drama gave its main character the happy ending Song Kang’s Hyun-su might never get. While Parasyte: The Grey and Sweet Home are adaptations of very different stories, there are some interesting parallels between the Netflix monster shows. This includes the existence of creatures who take over humans and have their own personalities. There are also important parallels between the show’s respective main characters — Jeong Su-in and Cha Hyun-su.
Played by Jeon So-nee, Su-in is the lead Parasyte: The Grey character, having been created for the show. Su-in does not exist in Parasyte, the manga on which Parasyte: The Grey is based, which is why it was impossible to predict where her story was heading. While Parasyte: The Grey season 2 could change things, Su-in got a satisfying ending in which her “monster” became her friend. This would be a great way to conclude Hyun-su’s story in Sweet Home season 3, but it is unlikely it will happen.

Parasyte: The Grey’s Su-in Gets A Happy Ending (Which Hyun-su Might Never Get)
Su-in learns how to live with her monster
Close
Parasyte: The Grey ends with Su-in and her parasite, Heidi, becoming allies as the creature promises that its human host will never be alone. While Su-in’s transformation into Heidi originally played out like something scary and invasive, Parasyte: The Grey’s main character eventually learned how to co-exist with this mysterious organism. Unlike the other parasites, “Heidi” could not get to Su-in’s brain, leaving it no choice but to co-exist with the human host. However, rather than making Su-in a hostage in her own body, Heidi became friends with its human host.

This is very different from the relationship between Hyun-su and his monster alter, which was born from Sweet Home’s monster curse. Hyun-su lives in a constant Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation where his monster self can take over at any time. While Hyun-su has used his powers to protect himself and his friends, his transformation is not positive. Hyun-su’s monster alter is evil and likely wants to take over Song Kang’s character’s body definitively. Therefore, it is difficult to imagine Hyun-su will get a happy ending that is similar to Su-in’s in Parasyte: The Grey.

Parasyte: The Grey’s Su-in Is Similar To Sweet Home’s Hyun-su (With 1 Big Difference)

Every time Hyun-su feels fear, pain, or anything negative, his monster alter tries to take over.
There are a lot of similarities between Parasyte: The Grey’s Su-in and Sweet Home’s Hyun-su, which is why the former’s ending can serve as a parameter for what will happen to the latter. Both Su-in and Hyun-su experienced traumatic events in their childhood, leading to psychological impacts that would tie into their heroes’ journeys. Hyun-su had to learn how to open himself to others and create new bonds after losing his family, whereas Su-in had to learn how to trust others after growing up with an abusive father.

However, whereas Su-in’s parasite ended up helping her rebuild her life, Hyun-su’s monster alter has used all the pain in the character’s heart to make itself stronger. Every time Hyun-su feels fear, pain, or anything negative, his monster alter tries to take over. The scene in which Su-in talks to her parasite on a different plane of existence is the complete opposite of the moments in which Hyun-su is confronted by his monster alter. Heidi becomes a friend to Su-in, very much like Shinichi and Migi in Parasyte, whereas Hyun-su’s monster is a threat to him and his friends.
Sweet Home season 3 premiers in 2024.
Why Sweet Home Should Give Hyun-su A Happy Ending Like Parasyte: The Grey’s
Hyun-su deserves a happy ending (even if there’s never a cure)
After everything the character has gone through, Song Kang’s Hyun-su deserves a happy ending in Sweet Home. It is safe to say things will get much worse before they get better in Sweet Home season 3, as there are still way too many threats to be defeated. Still, considering all the deaths and tragedies that happened in Sweet Home's first two seasons, there has to be some victory for the remaining protagonists at the end. Hyun-su has been a tragic protagonist since the show’s first episode, and not much has changed for him since then.

Hyun-su has lost a lot of friends, not to mention how the character is not even sure what he is fighting for. Hyun-su wants to protect his friends, but he also refuses to hurt other monsters and argues that they are living creatures just like humans are. The happiest ending for Hyun-su in Sweet Home would be if he found a balance between his regular and monster selves, similar to Su-in in Parasyte: The Grey, assuming there will never be a cure to the curse. This would put an end to the threat brought by “evil Hyun-su.”
