Apple TV+'s Monsterverse Spinoff Promise Is Even More Exciting After 1 Monarch Season 2 Tease

Summary Apple TV+ plans multiple Monsterverse spinoffs following success of Godzilla x Kong, including Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2.

Toho's Kaiju may appear in Apple TV+ shows, creating exciting opportunities for fans to see classic monsters on the small screen.

With a wide selection of Toho monsters potentially available, Apple TV+ spinoffs could introduce iconic creatures like Anguirus and Titanosaurus.

A major tease concerning what Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 may offer drastically raises expectations for any and all of Apple TV+'s upcoming Monsterverse spinoffs. In the wake of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's box office success, the streamer confirmed that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is on the horizon. Interestingly, though, that's not the extent of the streamer's plan for Godzilla and Kong's world; it also announced that "multiple" spinoffs are coming.

As it stands, there's no indication of how many TV spinoffs Apple TV+ intends to make, or which Titans they'll use. They could involve unexplored periods in the Monsterverse timeline, new Titans, or regions of the Monsterverse's Hollow Earth world that audiences haven't glimpsed yet. But if comments about what the Monsterverse could potentially do with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 also apply to the spinoffs, then there's ample reason to have high hopes for the small-screen installments to come.

Toho's Kaiju Can Appear In Apple TV+'s Monsterverse Shows

Apparently, Toho is open to shows like Monarch using its kaiju (and not just Godzilla)

When asked about the possibility of Toho kaiju appearing in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, co-creator Chris Black said, "Toho have been incredible collaborators and I think any of their creations would be available to us if we wanted to bring them into our world." The sense of optimism in this remark is interesting, considering that there was a widely held perception that using Toho's monsters came with roadblocks. As Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty has pointed out, including Toho kaiju in Legendary's films can be expensive because the rights to use them have to be purchased.

For that reason, it's not surprising that the Monsterverse often gravitates toward original Titans and has only used a handful of kaiju from Toho's library. But as Black's comment reveals, these creatures appearing in Apple TV+'s shows is hardly unfeasible. If it's true that "any" of Toho's monsters are on the table (with the obvious exception of any that Legendary plans to save for Godzilla and Kong's movies), there will be a multitude of opportunities for viewers to meet Monsterverse incarnations of Godzilla's monster allies and villains.

Which Toho Kaiju Could Apple TV+'s Monsterverse Spinoffs Use?

Toho has plenty of monsters Legendary's movies are unlikely to use

Close

If Apple TV+'s spinoffs are provided a wide selection of established kaiju to choose from, there's more than a dozen they could likely draw upon. Top-tier threats like Destoroyah and SpaceGodzilla may be held back for a potential Godzilla vs. Kong 3, but no such restraints may exist on monsters like Ebirah, Gorosaurus, Hedorah, Baragon, Varan, King Caesar, Anguirus, and Titanosaurus. All could be candidates for appearances in Apple TV+'s shows. The notion of classic Toho monsters being brought to life with big-budget visual effects has always been one of the Monsterverse's biggest appeals, so leaning on some of these creatures could be a massive boon to the TV side of the Monsterverse's future.
