BG3's Astarion Actor Returns To D&D In Iconic New Role

Summary Neil Newbon, known for his role as Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3, lends his voice to Vecna in Dungeons & Dragons' upcoming adventure module.

Vecna: Eve of Ruin features iconic locations and over 30 new monsters for characters between Level 10 and 20.

While Newbon won't feature in the digital version of the adventure module, his performance as Vecna in the trailer is captivating and memorable.

Neil Newbon, the beloved actor being Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3 makes his return to the world of Dungeons & Dragons albeit in a very different role. While Newbon has had a prolific career behind the microphone, his most popular character is undoubtedly the vampire rogue in Larian Studios' RPG for which he even earned the coveted Best Performance award at The Game Awards 2023. While he may not be returning to play Astarion in the near future, he's still doing some rather exciting with Wizards of the Coast on its ever-popular fantasy game series.

Unveiled in a trailer on YouTube to promote the upcoming D&D Adventure Module Vecna: Eve of Ruin, Newbon lends his voice to the titular Lich and delivers a brief but genuinely memorable performance.

Whether Wizards of the Coasts intends to further use the actor as the iconic villain remains unknown but his voice is a perfect fit for the sinister ruminations of the undead god. The Eve of Ruin adventure will see players working together with some of Dungeons & Dragons' most famous archmages to rebuild the Rod of Seven Parts and stop Vecna from destroying every plane of existence.

Designed for characters between Level 10 and 20, Eve of Ruin includes several iconic locales such as the Forgotten Realms, Planescape, Spelljammer, Dragonlance, Eberron, and more as players take on over 30 new monsters from across the multiverse. The book can be purchased in hard copy or digitally through D&D Beyond. Those who pre-order the module will gain access to the prequel story Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye, early access to Eve of Ruin, and exclusive digital perks like a dice set, and 11 new frames.

Vecna is one of Dungeons & Dragons' oldest villains, having first been mentioned in the original version of the game back in 1976.

While Newbon may lend his vocal talents to Vecna in the Eve of Ruin trailer, it appears that he won't feature in the digital version of the adventure module. While it would probably be too much to ask of Wizards of the Coast to have the actor read out segments of the digital book, it's still fun to imagine. In just a minute, Newbon is able to capture the elegant arrogance of one of Dungeons & Dragons' most feared characters, so hopefully he has an opportunity to continue playing the villain in future trailers or promotional cinematics.

It's also fun to know that Newbon is open to continue working with Dungeons & Dragons now that his work on Baldur's Gate 3 has officially come to an end. Larian Studios has confirmed that it has no plans on returning to the game for expansions or a sequel, so while Astarion may appear in other mediums, his time in the RPG has come to a close. Vecna: Eve of Ruin launches on May 21 and can be pre-ordered now.
