The L Word: New York Season 1 Is Confirmed - Everything We Know
Summary The L Word: New York Season 1 is confirmed for a reboot in 2023, following the groundbreaking original series about LGBTQ+ women.
Leisha Hailey may return as fan-favorite Alice, but no official cast announcements have been made.
The story for The L Word: New York Season 1 is a reboot set in NYC, possibly following plotlines from the original series.
The L Word: New York season 1 will serve as a reboot of the original 2004 Showtime drama series, but news has been slow to arrive since its announcement in 2023. The L Word is a classic of LGBTQ+ TV show that follows the lives of a group of lesbian and bisexual women in West Hollywood. The series was groundbreaking for being the first series with an ensemble of women characters who primarily identify as lesbian and bisexual and featured queer sexuality from the point of view of LGBTQ+ women, which had rarely been done in TV or movies.
The show lasted for six seasons, concluding in 2009, and led to the spin-off reality show The Real L Word, the documentary L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin, and a sequel TV series The L Word: Generation Q, which premiered in 2019 and lasted for three seasons. The franchise's frank depictions of lesbian and bisexual sex and romance and honest insight into the difficulties and differences of growing up queer in America have been roundly applauded. With The L Word: New York, the expectations are high for the newest entry in the series.
Related The L Word: 6 Things That Have Aged Poorly (& 5 Things That Will Remain Timeless) The L Word was one of the most groundbreaking TV shows of its time. However, some aspects of this LGBT+ series don't hold up well.
The L Word: New York Season 1 Is Confirmed
The Series Was Announced In 2023
The L Word: New York was confirmed in March 2023, when The L Word: Generation Q was canceled (via Deadline). The cancelation came around the time Showtime announced it would be merging with Paramount+, when no shows were being renewed, making Generation Q one of many casualties of that integration. While there has not been much news since that 2023 announcement, it's notable that 2024 is the 20th anniversary of the original The L Word, so it's possible that big news regarding a reboot could soon be on its way (via IndieWire).

Leisha Hailey As Alice Is A Fan-Favorite From The Original L Word Universe
Close
Out suggests that Leisha Hailey should return as Alice Pieszecki, calling her, "The heart of The L Word universe."
There has not been any news regarding who will appear in The L Word: New York and, as it's a reboot, it's unlikely anyone from The L Word: Generation Q will be returning to the series unless they play a new character. However, if the new series decides that it will play fast and loose with timelines, and wants to bring back characters from Generation Q, Out suggests that Leisha Hailey should return as Alice Pieszecki, calling her, "The heart of The L Word universe."
Beyond that, people have not yet begun to speculate on who could be involved in the new series. However, there is a bevy of talented lesbian and bisexual actors who would be right at home in the franchise's dramatic, outrageous, and funny tone. Kate McKinnon, a New York native herself, could be the perfect choice for the series. Alia Shawkat of Arrested Development, Amandla Stenberg of Bodies Bodies Bodies (and long ago, Rue in The Hunger Games), and Samira Wiley of Orange is the New Black could be great new cast members.
The L Word: New York Season 1 Story
So far, the only information regarding the story for The L Word: New York season 1 is an unremarkable synopsis, "A reboot of the groundbreaking original series set in New York City". While that doesn't tell much more than the title already gives away, the word "reboot" is significant. The L Word: Generation Q was specifically a sequel. As a reboot, The L Word: New York could very well follow many of the same plotlines from the original series, now updated for a 2020s NYC rather than a 2000s LA.
All three seasons of The L Word: Generation Q are available to buy on Amazon Prime Video.
