Why Harry Potter Didn't Use The Time-Turner Again After Prisoner Of Azkaban

Summary Time-turners were only used in "Prisoner of Azkaban" to save Sirius, raising questions about their potential and limitations.

J.K. Rowling addressed the time-turner plot holes by introducing limitations on time travel and ultimately destroying all time-turners.

The destruction of all time-turners in "Order of the Phoenix" prevented further use and solved the plot holes in a messy way.

The Harry Potter books and movies introduced a variety of magical objects that were quite useful to the Golden Trio throughout the six books and seven movies, but the time-turner raised many questions, mostly why wasn’t it used again after Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The Harry Potter movie saga expanded the books’ fanbase even more and allowed fans to see what the wizarding world would be like in real life. The Harry Potter movies were mostly loyal to the books, especially when it came to some of the most intriguing objects in this unique world.

Throughout his mission to defeat Lord Voldemort, Harry learned not just a variety of spells and potions but also how to use certain magical objects to his benefit. Many of these were quite useful during the Battle of Hogwarts and other key moments in the saga, but there’s one that could have been used at different points in Harry’s journey yet was only used in one book and movie: time-turners. The presence of time-turners in the world of Harry Potter created plot hotels and raised many questions, especially about why they weren’t used again after Prisoner of Azkaban.

Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban Introduced Time-Turners (& Created Big Plot Holes)

Time-Turners Were Only Useful In Prisoner Of Azkaban

To save Sirius from a horrible fate in Azkaban, Dumbledore allowed Hermione and Harry to use a time-turner.

One of the most beloved entries in the Harry Potter saga is Prisoner of Azkaban, the third book and movie in the series. Prisoner of Azkaban introduced Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), Harry’s godfather who was unfairly sent to Azkaban after being framed for the murder of James and Lily Potter. To save Sirius from a horrible fate in Azkaban, Dumbledore allowed Hermione and Harry to use a time-turner, a very useful magical object that was only used in Prisoner of Azkaban, raising questions about its use, limitations, and why it wasn't used again when it could have come in handy on many other occasions.

A time-turner is a device used in the wizarding world to travel in time. It resembles an hourglass on a necklace, and the number of times the hourglass is turned is the number of hours the user travels back in time. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione was given a time-turner by Professor McGonagall so she could attend more classes, meaning she was able to attend two classes at the same time. The Ministry of Magic allowed Hermione to use the time-turner for her classes, but she also used it to save Sirius Black with Harry’s help.

The presence of time-turners ended up creating big plot holes in the Harry Potter saga, as these could have been used to prevent some of the biggest tragedies in the series.

After dropping out of two classes, Hermione gave the Time-Turner back as she no longer needed it, and time-turners weren’t used again in the rest of the Harry Potter saga. The presence of time-turners ended up creating big plot holes in the Harry Potter saga, as these could have been used to prevent some of the biggest tragedies in the series, mainly the death of Harry’s parents. Even with the time restraints of the time-turner (more on that in a bit), Dumbledore could have used the time-turner shortly after the deaths of James and Lily Potter to prevent their deaths, supposing he already had the time-turner back then.

Even if he didn’t have it at the time, there’s the big question of why time-turners weren’t used again after Prisoner of Azkaban, and there were many situations where they would have been very useful. Dumbledore approved the use of a time-turner so Hermione could attend her classes and later so Sirius Black could be saved, so he surely could have given his approval to prevent other tragedies.

What J.K. Rowling Said About Time-Turners After Prisoner Of Azkaban

J.K. Rowling Tried To Fill In The Gaps In The Time-Turner’s Use

To solve as many plot holes as possible, Rowling posted the words of a character named Professor Saul Croaker.

In a post on the Wizarding World website (formerly Pottermore), J.K. Rowling admitted that she didn’t consider the many implications time travel would have in the Harry Potter saga. Rowling explained she emphasized the dangers of being seen in the past and that time travel can bring solutions but also dangerous consequences, depending on one’s actions in the past. To solve as many plot holes as possible, Rowling posted the words of a character named Professor Saul Croaker, who explained that the longest period that could be relieved without harm was five hours.

Croaker added that going back further than five hours had resulted in “catastrophic harm” to the user(s), and shared the case of a witch named Eloise Mintumble, who got trapped for five days in 1402. When she returned to her present, her body aged five centuries and was “irreparably damaged”, and she changed the past so much that 25 descendants of the people she met were “un-born”. Time-turners, then, were used to solve trivial problems and not greater issues due to the consequences these could have.

All Time-Turners Were Destroyed In Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix

There Was Only One Solution To Avoid More Time-Turners Plot Holes

Close

Part of Rowling’s solution to the plot holes and more issues regarding time-turners arrived in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, the entire stock of time-turners kept in the Time Room of the Ministry of Magic were destroyed…but in a very peculiar way. Because of the way one of them fell, the entire stock got trapped in an endless loop of falling, un-falling, and falling again, so they became useless.

While this prevented the characters from using time-turners again, it felt like an easy solution from Rowling, and ultimately, like in many other movies, books, and more, time travel in the Harry Potter saga ended up being messy.
