Duranga Season 2 Ending Explained (In Detail)

Anya hears Sammit's whistle, hinting at a dark connection that may suggest the familial evil skipped a generation and now resides within her.

Duranga season 2 premiered on October 24, 2023, and the eight-episode season of the Hindi-language web series ended with a violent confrontation and an ominous look to the future. An adaptation of the Korean series Flower of Evil, which featured one of the most menacing K-Drama villains ever, Duranga comes from Indian producer Goldie Behl and premiered in August 2022 with nine episodes in season 1. The Hindi drama series' first season follows Inspector Ira (Drashti Dhami), a police officer in Mumbai on the hunt for a serial killer who uses the same methods as a past notorious murderer.

After the killer passed, his family was ostracized. His son, Abhishek Banne (Gulshan Devaiah), is at first accused, but it's revealed that Ira's husband, Sammit Patel (Amit Sadh) is the killer. Through a series of complex twists, Abhishek takes over Sammit's identity to escape the shame of his past and in season 2, Sammit takes a new identity as well, that of Professor Dev Sahni. As the murders resume, Abhishek is once again accused and by the end of the season, Ira and Abhishek have discovered who Dev is and set out to stop him for good.

Sammit Goes On A Killing Spree

Professor Dev Sahni Tries To Cut Any Threads Leading To His Real Identity

While Sammit spends most of Duranga season 2 happy to play the part of Professor Dev Sahni, his urges eventually take over, and he begins killing again. This season, he begins targeting those close to Abhishek and his own family, worried that their proximity to him will reveal that he is the real Sammit and a serial killer. He murders Nikhil (Kiran Srinivas), a colleague of Ira's, worried she is getting too close to discovering his identity.

Rosy Telkar (Sonal Sagore), a character presumed dead in season 1, returns in season 2, and Sammit kills her as one of the few people who knows his true identity. Sammit's rampage continues, and he ends up murdering Gopu (Ganesh Yadav) as well, a man who used to procure women for Abhishek's father to kill, a monster in his own right. However, Sammit pushes his luck when he goes after Abhishek’s sister, Prachi (Barkha Bisht), and fails, tipping his identity to Abhishek who goes after him.

Sammit gained a second chance in Duranga season 2, one he didn't deserve, but a second chance all the same. He could have continued living his life as Professor Sahni and allowed Abhishek to live his life. Instead, Sammit goes back to his old ways and, in the process of trying to cover his tracks, ends up exposing himself worse than ever before.

Sammit And Abhishek Have A Stand-Off

Abhishek Has To Make A Crucial Decision

Abhishek tracks Sammit to Abhishek's childhood home, and it's there that the men, who have now shared an identity, have a standoff. Abhishek has been haunted by his father's crimes his whole life. His family's been ostracized by their community, and he's always the first accused when terrible things begin happening. Sammit is not just a murderous individual, he's the living embodiment of the man who ruined Abhishek's life. It's a powerful climax to season 2.

Abhishek ends up getting the drop on the serial killer and has a gun trained on him. Wanting to rid himself and his family of this "root trauma", Abhishek nearly kills Sammit but then realizes he does not want to be a killer like his father and puts the gun down, resolving to be better than him. Sammit takes the opportunity to attack Abhishek, but Ira arrives just in time and shoots him. He falls back into a river and is swept away, seemingly gone for good.

Ira avenges Nikhil, stands up to the man who lied to her during their entire marriage, saves her new love Abhishek, and takes down the criminal she's been pursuing for two seasons. It's a cathartic moment where the protagonists finally emerge victorious from a game that seemed almost unwinnable.

Anya Hears Sammit’s Whistle

The Sins Of Abhishek's Father May Still Affect His Family

At the very end of Duranga season 2, the episode jumps to a time in the near future. Prachi and her boyfriend Vikas (Abhijeet Khandkekar) announce their engagement to Ira and Abhishek, who are still happily together. Anya (Hera Mishra), Ira and Abhishek's daughter congratulates her aunt and soon-to-be uncle and retires to her room. While there alone, she hears Sammit's signature whistle and stops in her tracks with a strange look on her face.

As far as TV cliffhangers go, it's a pretty strong one. Sammit and Anya had a connection in season 2, with Sammit as Professor Sahni using the young girl to get close to her family. It's unclear whether the whistle signals that Sammit has survived his wounds and will return or, more sinisterly, Anya is hearing him in her mind, implying she could fall into the same evil as Sammit. After all, Anya's grandfather is the serial killer whose murders loom over the entire show.

Perhaps the familial evil Abhishek feared was inside him actually skipped a generation and is now inside his daughter. She's oddly comfortable with Sammit and in season 2, there is a moment that implies she has a darker side. Anya is bullied at school early in the season, but instead of going to her parents, she exacts violent revenge on her bullies, and she looks much too comfortable while doing so. Whatever the reason for her hearing Sammit, it's clear that Anya's story is just beginning.

The Real Meaning Of Duranga Season 2's Ending

Familial Guilt And Past Trauma Is Overcome But Not Vanquished

Close

Duranga season 2 feels like a very different show than the series' first installment, which was more about setting up the characters. In season 2, Duranga examines how children often end up paying for the sins of their parents. Abhishek's existence is defined by the monstrous things his father has done, despite his efforts to lead a good life, and, all the while, in the back of his mind, he's wondering if the same evil present in his father is in his own blood as well.

Abhishek's decision not to take a life at the end of Duranga season 2 isn't just the moral choice, it's the choice that says he is free from whatever yoke his father's memory has placed on him and his family. However, the end of season 2 also implies that it is not so simple to break away from the past. Anya will now have to contend with what her father has fought all these years and Abhishek must realize that just because he made the right choice once does not mean his trials are over.
