Blossoming into one of Netflix's most successful scripted comedies, The Upshaws has been renewed for a landmark part 6. Debuting in 2021 and created by the duo of Regina Y. Hicks and Wanda Sykes, The Upshaws follows the lives of a working-class Black family in Indianapolis, Indiana as they try to keep their various businesses afloat amid constant family turmoil. Despite its themes about family, mutual struggle, and the challenges of being Black in the United States, The Upshaws never misses a chance to put a hilarious spin on its subject matter.

Unlike other high-profile Netflix original series, The Upshaws has largely flown under the radar with critics and only earned a Rotten Tomatoes score for its first season, a mediocre 67%. Nevertheless, the series has proven to be a hit with audiences and has returned consistently from year to year, even as Netflix's most expensive original series can sometimes take years between seasons. This production style almost guarantees that the sitcom will stay popular, and Netflix has already expressed its faith in The Upshaws by renewing it for part 6.

Even as other Netflix originals languish in production quagmire for years before finally producing subsequent seasons, The Upshaws has been consistent from year to year. Because of this popularity and quick turnaround, Netflix renewed The Upshaws for part 6 in December 2023, months before part 5 even debuted (via Netflix). The sitcom follows a different season structure compared to other shows, and the upcoming part 6 will technically be the beginning of season 4 since every season since season 2 has been split into two distinct parts that air at different times.

The Upshaws part 5 premiered all 6 of its episodes on April 18, 2024.

Though it hasn't been announced yet, it can be assumed that part 6 will only be the first half of season 4, suggesting that part 7 is sure to follow. On the other hand, with strikes and other delays out of the way, The Upshaws part 6 could see the show return to a more traditional season structure. However, the parts structure allows Netflix to produce a handful of episodes at a time so that The Upshaws is never really off the proverbial air for that long.

Despite some shocking twists at the end of part 5, it can be assumed that the entire ensemble cast of The Upshaws will be on hand for the upcoming part 6. A few names that are almost certain to return are Mike Epps as Bennie and Kim Fields as Regina since their love story, and household, is essentially the heart of the entire show. Likewise, Wanda Sykes will probably be back as Regina's older sister Lucretia, even though she seemingly left Indianapolis for Atlanta in the part 5 finale.

Though The Upshaws is still very much a sitcom, it often leaves its seasons off on major cliffhangers to keep viewers wanting more. Part 5 was no different and featured a few twists that will shape the story of part 6. Most importantly, Lucretia fled to Atlanta to be with Frank and part 6 will need to explore the fallout of that decision and whether she'll be able to stay away from her family, even if they drive her nuts. Also, Kelvin's decision to move his mom Tasha into the Upshaw house will have repercussions for Bennie and Regina's relationship, and it seems that the senior Upshaw merely traded one troublesome house guest for another.
