Shōgun episode 10 "A Dream of a Dream" is set to be released on Hulu and FX on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The final episode of the 10-part miniseries will pick up right where Shōgun episode 9 "Crimson Sky" left off after Lady Mariko's memorable scene. The celebrated series will conclude in what is poised to be an explosive and captivating season finale after episode 9 depicted Mariko's contribution to Lord Toranaga's master plan in Osaka. Shōgun has received outstanding reviews and is already a top contender for the best limited series of 2024.

Based on its title "Crimson Sky", Shōgun episode 9 was expected to feature the unfolding of Toranaga's Siege of Osaka with his army from Edo. After suffering several great losses in the most recent Shōgun episodes, Toranaga appears to finally be in a position where he has the element of surprise on his side. Lady Mariko fulfilled her duty to Toranaga after being essentially held captive in Osaka by Lord Ishido, successfully cracking his inflated sense of authority. Mariko also reunited with her old friend Ochiba-no-kata in what became one of the most powerful exchanges between characters in the entire series.

After Lady Mariko apparently completed Toranaga's "Crimson Sky" plan in an unexpected way, Toranaga should have the ability to once again utilize the sacrifice of one of his most trusted allies to advance his mission to become the shōgun. Based on the brief glimpse of the Shōgun finale trailer, Blackthorne and Toranaga appear to be at odds with one another when they meet again in the aftermath of the explosion in Osaka. Blackthorne reveals in the clip that his true intentions for coming to Japan were to take advantage of their culture for trading purposes. Will There Be A Shogun Season 2?

As of the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation from Hulu, FX, or Shōgun creators of a second season. Shōgun is currently being categorized as a limited series, which, if that holds after the finale, will indicate that there will not be a continuation of Shōgun's narrative. Based on the critical acclaim and popularity of the series, however, a second season of Shōgun is certainly plausible. Toranaga, who is based on the real-life shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, is expected to become Japan's new ruler in the Shōgun finale. The series has made some differences from the original novel, which could be the case if the creators of Shōgun wish to extend Toranaga's seemingly inevitable rise to power.
