Why A This Is Us Revival Will Never Happen
Summary According to This Is Us star Jon Huertas, creator Dan Fogelman had a clear vision for the show, making a revival or spinoff unlikely.
The complete story told by This Is Us would risk losing its emotional potency with a revival.
A continuation would need to bring back the original actors because of how well-received their characters were.
This Is Us star Jon Huertas has opened up about why the popular drama series is never going to get a revival. The series follows the lives of three siblings and their parents in the present day, focusing on the ups and downs they experience while also using flashbacks to flesh out more about their younger years. It has received critical acclaim throughout its run on NBC, getting nominated for an assortment of awards throughout the time it was airing.
Speaking with TV Insider, though, Huertas revealed that it was unlikely for the story to continue following This Is Us' ending. The actor explained how series creator Dan Fogelman had a particular vision of the series, and how unlikely it was that it would accommodate for a revival or a spinoff. Check out what Huertas had to say about the possibility below:
I don’t think [a revival or spinoff] will happen for This Is Us. This story was super personal to Dan Fogelman and he told the story the way he wanted to tell it and ended it the way he wanted to end it. And I think it might do a disservice to the show if someone other than Dan especially tried to put something together. But I think that the story has been told, and I can’t even envision what that spinoff would look like, so I don’t think it’s going to happen.
Why This Is Us Doesn't Need A Sequel Or Spinoff
By the end of the series, This Is Us has told a complete story about the Pearson family and their many ups and downs throughout their lives. The finale brings the show to a fitting conclusion, with everyone living the lives they were meant to after going through so much turbulence for many years. While it doesn't mean more won't happen in their lives once the cameras stop rolling, the ending they received was a fitting conclusion to everything the show had been building up to since season 1.
If the show were to be revived, the This Is Us cast would need to return, as the characters they portrayed were a crucial part of what made the series such a success. However, by continuing their stories, the show would threaten to ruin the fitting endings that each of the characters got by the end of the original series. This would jeopardize the memory of the original story, as it would make the finale not an ending, but rather a stepping stone to another show.

While it would be interesting to see the Pearson siblings' lives following the end of the series, bringing This Is Us back in any form wouldn't be able to capture the detailed storytelling and emotional potency of the original. Given that the story offered so much closure by the end, it would be difficult to open the finale back up in a way that would justify continuing the story. For now, it seems the series isn't fit for a continuation, and would be better off left with a proper conclusion.
While a revival isn't happening, This is Us stars Sterling K. Brown, Mandy Moore, and Chris Sullivan are launching That Was Us, a rewatch podcast scheduled to premiere on May 14.
