With the Morpho machine helping the community take the next step on their personal growth journey, the residents of Deerfield look closer at what their life potential actually means for their present, and how to get there. The series leaps forward in terms of emotional development and the characters are given more room to grow, which means there is less focus on pure comedy, and more on story development. While Chris O'Dowd's Dusty Hubbard is placed at the center of the series, season 2 gives more time to the wider cast, and it works in The Big Door Prize's favor.

The dynamics and relationships between the residents of Deerfield are also explored in greater detail, and it all adds up to make a much stronger series.

Characters like Giorgio (Josh Segarra), Beau Kovac (Aaron Roman Weiner), Trina (Djouliet Amara), and Mr. Johnson (Patrick Kerr) have scene-stealing moments whenever they appear, their roles drastically increased in season 2. The dynamics and relationships between the residents of Deerfield are also explored in greater detail, and it all adds up to make a much stronger series. However, not all the additional storylines are equally entertaining and other characters, like Cass' mother Izzy, could have been reduced to make room for the most compelling stories and characters.

Despite there being just a few too many narratives, the best threads shine through and make this season even more compelling and entertaining than The Big Door Prize season 1. Dusty and Cass explore time apart, Trina and Jacob ride out their rollercoaster relationship, and some relationships that were only hinted at in season 1 come shining through, enhancing season 2 overall. The cast is fantastic, and their chemistry works well, with many connections that help keep the story feeling focused rather than spinning out of control.

While The Big Door Prize season 2 concluded with a seemingly revelatory moment regarding the Morpho, season 2 continues to slowly trickle more details about the machine that has inspired everyone in Deerfield to chase their dreams. The series has to maintain some of its mystery in order to keep getting renewed, but after two seasons, the truth about the machine and where it came from is still relatively cloudy. There are significant reveals and new information, but season 2 ends with more questions than answers.

As the characters explore their life potential and continue their journey, season 2 continues to be engaging and clever from start to finish.

Fortunately, the mystery is compelling, and the series features a wonderful cast with individual, yet simultaneously entangled, stories. The writing from creator David West Read and his team is able to cleverly weave together moments of humor and lightness, with emotional and reflective beats that help push the story forward. As the characters explore their life potential and continue their journey, season 2 continues to be engaging and clever from start to finish.

Selfishly, and with a burning curiosity, I felt that season 2 should have revealed more about the machine, but those in Deerfield are learning to focus on their journey, rather than the destination, and we must do the same. The Big Door Prize takes characters that seem fairly ordinary and generic but offers them a greater purpose, and the confidence to take the leap to achieve it. Season 2 easily overtakes season 1 in terms of quality and story, and hopefully, the series will continue to improve with future entries as well.
