Predicting What Happened To Doctor Who's 14 Doctors After Bi-Generating

Summary RTD introduced a new concept called "The Giggle" in Doctor Who, suggesting that all Doctors could be bi-generated.

RTD, returning as showrunner, has fans excited for new Doctor Who stories and changes to the series he helped revive.

Previous Doctors like Tenth and Twelfth might have unique post-regeneration stories based on who they could have turned to for new adventures.

Russell T Davies introduced an entirely new concept in Doctor Who "The Giggle" with bi-generation, but he took things a step further, suggesting all the previous incarnations were also bi-generated. With RTD returning to helm Doctor Who after Chibnall's controversial era, there has been a lot of excitement for the veteran Doctor Who writer to return. Not only did RTD play a pivotal role in reviving the series in 2005 after the series was dormant for almost 10 years, but he also served as the first showrunner and guided the stories for the first two Doctors after the show returned.

With RTD's wealth of experience, he is also not afraid to make changes to the property that he has helped to carefully restore. RTD mentioned in his commentary for the episode where the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant) bi-generated into two separate versions of the Doctor with the new Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) also appearing, that he believed it was possible that all previous versions of the Doctor bi-generated. If this is true, it's worth considering where these former versions of the Doctor went after their time in the TARDIS came to an end.

14 Jodie Whittaker

The Thirteenth Doctor

Close

While bi-generation appeared to thoroughly surprise the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors, with both of them referring to it as a myth, there is clearly a lot that is not understood about this quirk. Fourteen and Fifteen both appeared side by side, but if previous Doctors also bi-generated, it is possible that their previous versions had a more complete separation, or used some of their Time Lord energy to travel to the places and people that mean the most to them.

The Doctor and Yaz shared a moment where they could have kissed, but instead chose to hold back.

For Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor, it's possible that she could have returned to her former companion and romantic interest, Yazmin Khan (Mandip Gill). Yaz and the Doctor shared a special connection not entirely unlike the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler. Shortly before regenerating, the Doctor and Yaz shared a moment where they could have kissed, but instead chose to hold back. If a bi-generated Thirteenth Doctor had a chance to live a life away from the TARDIS, it makes the most sense that it would be with Yaz.

13 Peter Capaldi

The Twelfth Doctor

Close

The Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, had a challenging time in his travels as he dealt with loss and loneliness. Even though he continued to travel with his companion from a previous regeneration, it took them time to get to know each other and accept one another despite their changes.

However, Twelve and Clara Oswald grew incredibly close, and although his memory of her was temporarily removed, it was restored just ahead of his own regeneration. With Clara flooding back into his memories, it is possible that Twelve went to Clara and Me, who were both last seen traveling in their own TARDIS, with Clara frozen in her last moment. This everlasting Clara, the eternal immortal Me, and Twelve could have had great adventures, all existing outside of time together.

12 Matt Smith

The Eleventh Doctor

Close

Matt Smith spent most of his time as the Doctor with a real family. Amy Pond, Rory Williams, and their child who would go on to be his wife through timey-wimey complications. However, Eleven and his dear companions were separated by the Weeping Angels in Manhattan. Due to several complications, the Doctor was unable to return to his friends, and thus he had to move on.

He was unable to visit them and remove them from the timeline due to the potential destruction of New York, but bi-generations appear to be separate from the standard forms of the Doctor.

However, if he bi-generated, and his former self was able to land in a time and place where he could live out an ordinary life, it would likely be with his friends Amy and Rory. He was unable to visit them and remove them from the timeline due to the potential destruction of New York, but bi-generations appear to be separate from the standard forms of the Doctor. Instead of taking them away, he could simply return to live with them, which he already did for more time than any previous companion during the invasion of the mysterious black cubes.

11 David Tennant

The Tenth Doctor

Close

David Tennant's Tenth Doctor is a complicated case, due to this Doctor already having multiple versions floating around the Whoverse. A part-human clone of Ten went to live with the Doctor's beloved Rose Tyler in a parallel universe. And in the future, the Fourteenth Doctor is an identical copy of the Doctor aside from being slightly older. He chooses to go and live with his friend Donna and her family. Ten does not have either Rose or Donna to turn to, and so he needs to look elsewhere.

For this reason, Ten may choose to return to a companion who arguably gave the most, while receiving the least back, Martha Jones. Martha already has a relationship with Mickey Smith at this point, another largely ignored companion. The Doctor would not have any romantic motivations, and considering Martha's independence and Mickey's growth, they would not rely on the Doctor, but they could form a closer bond than before. Alternatively, Ten showed a clear fondness for Sarah-Jane Smith, whom he re-encountered on his travels. He could join her, K-9, and the kids on their adventures.

10 Christopher Eccleston

The Ninth Doctor

Close

Christopher Eccleston's Doctor came fresh from the Time War, and despite his upbeat appearance, he was harboring a lot of darkness and frustration. In the Ninth Doctor's final moments, he absorbs the Time Vortex energy from Rose to save her life, which also causes him to regenerate. Since Rose continues traveling with the new regeneration, Nine would need to make a new path.

Immediately before regenerating, Nine learns that the Daleks were not all killed in the Time War, and while Rose has potentially finally killed the last ones, he may be more cautious than before. Nine may set out on a journey with his friend Captain Jack Harkness, whom he would learn survived thanks to Rose, or even find work as a Time Agent trying to track down remnants of his own great war. It is unlikely that after his very short time as the Doctor, Nine would give up adventuring and trying to right the wrongs of his past.

9 John Hurt

The War Doctor

Close

While Nine dealt with the aftermath of war, John Hurt's War Doctor was immersed in it. The War Doctor regenerates immediately after his encounter with Doctors Ten and Eleven, and it appears that his memory disappears following their separation, but a bi-generated War Doctor could potentially retain those memories while the new Doctor lives on without them. If this is the case, he would likely spend the remainder of his days trying to right the wrongs that played out on Gallifrey.

Gallifrey is time-locked by the Moment, separated from the rest of time and space. If the War Doctor was able to bi-generate and separate from his new form in time, it is possible that he could have remained on Gallifrey with his people. There, he could help to try and restore Gallifrey to its former glory and educate the Time Lords to behave in a way that is less ambivalent, and more considerate. This could mean that when Sacha Dhawan's Master destroyed Gallifrey, the War Doctor could have protected and helped others of his kind escape.

8 Paul McGann

The Eighth Doctor

Close

Little is known about Paul McGann's Doctor and his adventures after the film as he never had any further televised adventures. However, the appearances of his stubborn and conscientious Doctor in later episodes of Doctor Who, as a part of the Doctor's own memories, could suggest what his fate would be. Eight could have continued traveling with his first companion after regenerating, but his regeneration came in a tragic time of war.

Eight could have continued living as a shadow of this War Doctor, trying to guide and ensure that his actions would not take things too far.

Eight was given a special potion to regenerate into a new form that was somewhat more controlled than previous versions. With this in mind, Eight could have continued living as a shadow of this War Doctor, trying to guide and ensure that his actions would not take things too far. Alternatively, he could have run far away, and tried to forget and ignore anything that would come after that moment. In the Doctor's mind, Eight appears stubborn and uncooperative, even wearing different clothing to his other incarnations, which suggests he would forge his own path.

7 Sylvester McCoy

The Seventh Doctor

Close

Sylvester McCoy also had a brief time helming the TARDIS, before reappearing in the 1996 Doctor Who movie to pass on the mantle to Paul McGann. McCoy formed close relationships with companions like Ace and Melanie Bush, but as shown in his interactions in Tales of the TARDIS, he did not reconnect with them after his regeneration. The Doctor seen in TotT is probably a bi-generated form of the Seventh Doctor if that theory holds true.

Seven was a fairly mysterious Doctor, but also one who cared deeply for his companions. In TotT, he tells Ace that he thinks of her every day. With that in mind, it is possible that he followed her adventures, and continued to keep an eye on old companions from a distance so as not to disrupt their lives.

6 Colin Baker

The Sixth Doctor

Close

Colin Baker's Doctor had a rough start, with one of the most strikingly different personalities to come out of the Doctor's regenerations. Upon regenerating, the Sixth Doctor lashed out and attacked his companion Peri Brown. However, the pair were able to build a relationship, although it was always somewhat tarnished by the Doctor's rash behavior.

In TotT, Six and Peri reunite, and are overjoyed to be reunited. It appears that time heals old wounds, and the Doctor recites some of Peri's many accomplishments since they parted ways. This clearly shows that he kept an eye on his companions, or at least on Peri. This could have been an action born out of regret and remorse for his negative actions, but it shows that later in his life, and possibly after regeneration, he became more sentimental and soft.

5 Peter Davison

The Fifth Doctor

Close

Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor also appears in an episode of TotT, but his conversation with Tegan Jovanka depicts a very different life after regeneration than Baker or McCoy's versions. The Fifth Doctor reveals that he never really stopped to look back and think about his past. After Adric was lost, and other companions came and went, he attempted to simply push forward.

At the end of the special episode, he asks Tegan to regale him with stories about her own life, clearly indicating this attitude of never stopping or slowing down likely persisted after regenerating. The Fifth Doctor regenerates after saving the life of Peri Brown when they were both exposed to a poison toxin. From his dialogue in TotT, it appears that he simply pushed on with new adventures after his regeneration into the Sixth Doctor, never looking back.

4 Tom Baker

The Fourth Doctor

Close

Tom Baker was one of the most beloved Doctors during his run on Doctor Who as the Fourth Doctor. He is also one of the Doctors who has revealed the most about potential adventures after bi-generation. His regeneration was unique as he was visited by the mysterious Watcher. The Watcher appears to join with his body as he regenerates, and could have exchanged places with the Fourth Doctor.

In a special short released on the official Doctor Who YouTube channel, the Fourth Doctor is revealed to save Leela during the Time War, which likely could have only happened after his regeneration. He is also seen in the 50th special, "The Day of the Doctor," where he plays a mysterious curator who has a striking resemblance physically and in terms of personality to the Fourth Doctor. Together, both of these events suggest that Four continued to work around Gallifrey, and even gained access to a TARDIS, before settling on Earth, in a gallery that had artwork from the Time War.

3 Jon Pertwee

The Third Doctor

Close

Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor spent many years on Earth, trying to repair his TARDIS and travel in time and space once again. However, shortly after his ability to travel was restored, he regenerated. If he bi-generated, he would either have a previous form stranded on the planet of spiders where he died, or, potentially more likely, his former version could have been sent back to Earth yet again.

If he was left on Earth after regenerating, it is possible he continued working alongside UNIT, or he could have gone on to make a new life for himself. The Third Doctor was extremely intelligent and could have easily gotten any job he wanted. However, he was also somewhat short-tempered and could have benefitted from some time on his own, away from roles and responsibilities.

2 Patrick Troughton

The Second Doctor

Close

Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor was forced to regenerate by the Time Lords, but if he was able to bi-generate, he could have returned to Earth and visited his former companions, Jamie McCrimmon and Zoe Heriot. However, both of these companions did have their memories wiped. Alternatively, there were some other companions the Doctor could have tried to find after bi-generation.

He could have been the version of the Second Doctor who appeared in the special multi-Doctor episodes later in the series.

As one of the earliest regenerations, the Second Doctor could have also chosen to go in search of people he knew on Gallifrey. Or, he could have been the version of the Second Doctor who appeared in the special multi-Doctor episodes later in the series. Whatever the case, the Second Doctor was just mischievous and clever enough to ensure he kept busy well into the future.

1 William Hartnell

The First Doctor

Close

The First Doctor was originally played by William Hartnell, who also reprised the role in future multi-Doctor stories. However, after he passed away, the First Doctor has been played by David Bradley. Bradley appeared in "Twice Upon a Time," a special Doctor Who Christmas episode that expands on the First Doctor's final moments. Here, the First Doctor shares that he is unwilling to regenerate, before being convinced by his much older self.

The First Doctor had a lot of learning and growing to do, but if he was to bi-generate and have a future as this version, he may have chosen to indulge his curiosity and spend his final days studying all that Earth had to offer. He grew to have a special fondness for the place, and without a TARDIS, he would need to make a life for himself without space and time travel. He also missed his family, having recently traveled with Susan, and could have chosen to find a family of his own after the many adventures that appeared in Doctor Who.
