Scary Movie Reboot: Confirmation & Everything We Know

Summary A Scary Movie franchise reboot is coming soon, seeking to skewer modern horror trends for new laughs.

No cast has been announced, and it is unclear if the reboot will maintain the original's low-brow humor.

Paramount and Miramax aim for 2025 release; reboot eyeing 2024 production start.

The popular horror spoof series Scary Movie is returning with a brand new film for the first time since the release of Scary Movie 5 in 2013. Debuting in 2000 and created by the Wayans family, Scary Movie took aim at the most popular horror films of the time and poked fun at many of the tropes of the genre. Hits like Scream, The Blair Witch Project, and I Know What You Did Last Summer were lambasted with hilarious low-brow humor, and Scary Movie kicked off a spoof movie trend that continued throughout the Aughts.

Though critics were cold toward it, Scary Movie was a bona fide blockbuster and grossed nearly $300 million against a budget of $20 million (via Box Office Mojo). Sequels were produced across the rest of the 2000s and though every Scary Movie entry had bright spots, they generally faded in quality until the lackluster release of 2013's Scary Movie 5. To make matters worse, Scary Movie inspired a host of other spoof movies that diluted the genre until it became a parody of itself. Now, a new Scary Movie film is in the works that promises to skewer modern horror.

One of the biggest drawing factors for the Scary Movie franchise was that it went after nearly every popular horror movie of its time, and mercilessly parodied them. Along with that, the series notably poked fun at common horror tropes that dominated respective eras like the 1990s and 2000s. With over a decade without an entry in the spoof series, there is a wealth of horror movies that fans want to see Scary Movie parody. The 2010s and early 2020s have ushered in a new era for horror, and that era isn't immune to humorous satire.

High-concept horror movies like Ari Aster's Hereditary and Midsommar seem like easy targets because of their self-serious and heady themes and modern-day horror icons like M3GAN also seem highly spoofable. The advancements in the genre present a tricky challenge for the Scary Movie reboot, largely because spoofs helped make tropes seem even more passe, and horror movies of the 2020s have largely eschewed them. A modern approach might be the best way to make the classic comedy franchise viable again.
