Spy x Family’s Anya is one of the most popular characters in recent years. This cheerful and whimsical little girl has captured the hearts of fans all over the globe. Nonetheless, behind her happy demeanor, hides one of the most tragic and enigmatic backstories. When she was much younger, Anya was a test subject in a governmental experiment called Project Apple.

For the longest time, fans believed Anya and Bond were the only beings who successfully gained powers through these experiments. Yet, Spy x Family Short Mission 13 could disprove this theory. In the chapter, the Forger's loveable dog, Bond, is seen having a flashback to his time as a test subject, showing a room full of dogs being subjected to cruel experiments. This could imply that something similar occurred in Anya’s case.

This might suggest that the experiments Anya had to go through to gain her psychic powers were also conducted on other children.

In Bond’s flashback, a room full of hurt and exhausted dogs can be seen. This heavily implies that he was not the only animal the scientists of Project Apple were trying to give esper powers to. Despite how little we know about the experiments these researchers did, we can infer that Anya’s experience was similar to Bond’s. In chapter 19, after learning about Bond’s powers, the young girl claims that the dog is just like her, implying that she knew about Bond being a test subject for Project Apple.

This might suggest that the experiments Anya had to go through to gain her psychic powers were also conducted on other children. The young protagonists of Spy x Family may not be the only children trying to keep their unique abilities hidden from the public. Anya’s fear of losing the people closer to her could be related to what occurred to the other children who were used as test subjects. Her friends or siblings could have died due to their injuries or have been taken away after they successfully obtained their powers.

While it has never been confirmed, it has been suggested that Anya was hiding in an orphanage at the beginning of the series after escaping Project Apple. It is currently unknown if she escaped by her own means or had someone’s help. Either way, with the possibility of other children being test subjects, there is a high likelihood that some were not as fortunate. Seeing as Project Apple was a secret program created to give certain people mind-related abilities, the kids who did not manage to escape could have been taken as weapons or spies for Ostania’s government.

By escaping, Anya was saved from spending her life servicing the interests of those in power. Among these individuals could be Donovan Desmond, Ostania’s former Prime Minister. One of the most popular theories about this man is that he was the one who ordered the Government to commence Project Apple as a means to obtain special powers. This hypothesis was born from the mysterious scars that can be seen on both sides of his head in chapters 37 and 38 of the manga. Anya could have been used as a means for Donovan to take over the country.

Anya’s past is most likely going to be revealed in future chapters, as it does not seem to be relevant to the story at the moment. Despite this, the implication that she is not the only child with powers could completely alter the course of Spy x Family. More espers besides Anya and Bond could be introduced in the future, either as allies of the Forger Family, or weapons under the command of the sinister Donovan.
