Star Wars' Next TV Show Is "The Prequel To The Prequels," Star Confirms - But With A Modern Twist
Summary The Acolyte star Amandla Stenberg explained the show will be a modern take on Star Wars, blending old and new elements.
Set 100 years before The Phantom Menace, The Acolyte will explore the fall of the Jedi Order in greater detail than ever seen before.
The Acolyte's modern spin is one of its most exciting aspects, and should help it become one of the most unique Star Wars stories ever.
Amandla Stenberg, the star of The Acolyte, confirmed that the show acts as a prelude to the prequel trilogy, and that it'll take its own modern spin on Star Wars. Stenberg will play the mysterious Mae in The Acolyte, a character who has been "swept up into a sinister mystery." While Mae's role in the show, and even many of The Acolyte's story details, aren't confirmed, it does seem that Mae will be central to the show's plot. As an important part of The Acolyte's cast, Stenberg has a unique perspective on the show, and she recently shared what she thought of the finished product.
In an interview with Games Radar, Stenberg said that The Acolyte will incorporate elements of the prequels while introducing a more modern take on its story.
"We are the prequel to the prequels. And the prequels have this kind of prestige to them, this monarchical vibe. So one of my main questions going in was: are we going to maintain that sensibility? And yes, in many ways we do, while also incorporating elements that feel really contemporary and relatable. When I watched [the finished episodes] I was really struck by how universal the story was."
Stenberg's comments seem to indicate that The Acolyte will be a unique blend of both old and new, which is very exciting. One of the best parts of Star Wars is how it adapts to the passage of time, and it seems The Acolyte will continue that trend. Bringing in new, modern perspectives to the story should help the show feel fresh, and its place in the larger Star Wars timeline should help connect it to already established stories like the prequel trilogy.

The Acolyte Is Set 100 Years Before The Phantom Menace
The show is connected to the prequels, but it will have an easy time setting itself apart
Close
The Acolyte is set during the High Republic era of Star Wars, 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, which makes it a true prequel to the prequels. The High Republic was a time of great prosperity and strength for the Jedi Order, but in just a century, it had become weak enough for Palpatine to completely destroy it. Based on its position in the timeline, The Acolyte should give huge insights into what caused the Jedi Order to fall so far.
The Acolyte's first two episodes premiere on Disney+ on June 4.
Despite its inherent connection to the prequel trilogy, The Acolyte is also setting itself up to be one of the most unique Star Wars stories ever. It's already promised to be a dark tale that focuses on both sides of the Force, and its modern elements should help it stand out even more. That, coupled with the contemporary feel that Amandla Stenberg hinted at, makes The Acolyte one of the most exciting Star Wars projects set for this year.
