One of the Biggest Sports Anime in Recent Memory is Now on Netflix

Summary Haikyu!! is a hit volleyball sports anime now on Netflix, offering new potential fans the opportunity to enjoy the series from start to finish.

The series' success is attributed to its engaging cast, good animation, and breaking into a new market at the right time.

The show stands out for its quality, ensemble cast, and ability to revive interest in the sports genre.

The hit volleyball sports anime Haikyu!! has arrived on Netflix, giving anime fans a chance to follow Karasuno's volleyball team from the start. While only one season is currently available, it is unlikely that Netflix will settle for that, especially with new feature films in Japan trying to tie up the story. Until then, fans can get a headstart on one of the most popular shows of the 2000s.

Haikyu!! is a remarkable work on many accounts, managing to achieve major success despite following a niche sport in Japan. This can be attributed to the engaging cast, the adaptation's good animation, and the lucky chance of breaking into a new market at the right time.

If one has to choose from all the sports shows today, watching a season of Haikyu!! is not a bad way to spend extra time in between seasonal favorites.

Haikyu!! Lives Up Volleyball With an Eccentric Ensemble Cast

Close

Haikyu!! follows Hinata Shoyo, who dreams of becoming a volleyball star despite his short size, only to find that his high school, Karasuno, has to rebuild its team from scratch. In a further twist, one of his teammates, Tobio Kageyama, defeated him in middle school: in other words, the rival character for Hinata is also someone he needs to work with to succeed. What follows is, at its core, a familiar underdog sports story, with Karasuno High slowly improving while taking on rival teams. Of course, Furudate and Production I.G. added more to keep it from being generic.

Furudate's biggest strength is dedicating time to a wide variety of characters. While Hinata and Tobio are ostensibly the leads of Haikyu!!, the story provides whole character arcs for several members of the team, allowing them to be fleshed out and become full-fledged characters. The story even follows other volleyball teams, turning them into momentary protagonists. This allows the writing to stay fresh by changing perspectives as necessary and providing a whole cast of characters that fans have quickly grown to love. Production I.G.'s adaptation added more flair, as it complimented the writing with visually exciting volleyball matches.

Haikyu!! Should Be On Every Anime Fan's Watchlist

In addition to being an excellent sports anime, its one of the best Shonen Jump series ever created

These qualities are how Haikyu!! became a highly-rated anime despite not focusing on a more popular sport, like soccer or American football. The anime has even been credited with reviving interest in the sports genre for North American audiences. So it is no wonder Netflix wanted to have a show of such a reputation among its offerings. Currently, the streaming service offers the first season and several movies, but with four seasons out, and Production I.G. in the middle of producing a movie duology to conclude its adaptation, newcomers will likely get to see more Haikyu!! in the future.
