This 2025 Movie Is The Perfect Horror Spin On A 96-Year-Old Disney Classic
Summary Screamboat, a horror comedy twist on Steamboat Willie, will feature a mischievous, murderous mouse villain.
Horror filmmakers are capitalizing on the public domain availability of Steamboat Willie for various adaptations.
Screamboat retains familiar elements from the original but adds a horror-comedy flair with practical effects.
A horror movie scheduled for a 2025 release is giving the perfect horror spin on a 96-year-old Disney classic that is now part of the public domain. Among the current trends in the horror genre is the adaptation of family-friendly stories and characters, which, unsurprisingly, has been a controversial trend. These adaptations gained force with the viral film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey in 2023, which has now started a multiverse of horror movies based on children’s stories, but other artists are bringing their takes on these once-innocent characters outside the “Poohniverse”.
The arrival of various tales and characters to the public domain is what has allowed these horror adaptations to happen, and among them are some characters made famous by Disney. One character who entered the public domain in 2024 is Mickey Mouse, but not the version of him that everyone expected. Mickey Mouse’s precursor, Oswald the Rabbit, and the version from the Steamboat Willie short film are now in the public domain, and both are getting horror movies, but one based on the latter is the perfect spin on the seemingly innocent mouse.

Screamboat Is Perfectly Flipping Disney’s Steamboat Willie
Screamboat Is Giving Steamboat Willie A Horror Comedy Twist
Screamboat is directed by Steven LaMorte, with the production teams behind Terrifier 2 and The Mean One.
Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, and just one day later, the first horror adaptation of the character was revealed. Now, another horror version of Mickey Mouse’s first short film has been announced, and it’s an exciting one thanks to the team behind it. Titled Screamboat, the film is directed by Steven LaMorte with the production teams behind Terrifier 2 and The Mean One, but unlike other Steamboat Willie horror movies and other horror adaptations of family-friendly characters, Screamboat has a horror comedy approach while keeping the elements unique to the original short film.
Screamboat will see a mix of practical effects, miniatures, and prosthetic makeup, with a team of visual effects artists from The Last Voyage of the Demeter and The Book of Boba Fett.
Screamboat is described (via Bloody Disgusting) as following a “mischievous mouse” stalking a group of New Yorkers on a late night ferry ride, who will unleash “murderous mayhem on a relaxing commute". However, even though it has a clear slasher influence, unlike another Steamboat Willie adaptation with a killer wearing a Mickey Mouse mask, Screamboat’s villain is a miniature mouse. As such, Screamboat will see a mix of practical effects, miniatures, and prosthetic makeup, with a team of visual effects artists from The Last Voyage of the Demeter and The Book of Boba Fett.
Screamboat is already giving Steamboat Willie a perfect horror spin by keeping the most recognizable elements from the short film.
Despite still being in pre-production, Screamboat is already giving Steamboat Willie a perfect horror spin by keeping the most recognizable elements from the short film. By making the main setting a ferry and having the villain be a small, murderous mouse (though it’s to be seen if it’s a more realistic mouse or one that looks like Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie) instead of a human dressed up as the character, Screamboat is doing this controversial horror trend the right way, while also embracing the absurdity of it by making it a horror comedy.
Steamboat Willie Is Getting Various Horror Adaptations (But Will They All Work?)
Horror Filmmakers Are Seizing Steamboat Willie’s Availability
The horror genre is about to see a variety of adaptations of Steamboat Willie. The first one to be announced was Mickey’s Mouse Trap, directed by Jamie Bailey. The first Mickey’s Mouse Trap trailer was released a day after Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, and it follows a group of friends who sneak into an amusement arcade and are attacked by a killer wearing a Mickey Mouse mask. Another adaptation is The Return of Steamboat Willie, directed by Kai Henry, TxREK, and Joe Smith, which sees Willie who, after 95 years of being locked away, is back for revenge and to get his steamboat back.
Another horror adaptation of Steamboat Willie, though this one is a video game, is Infestations: Origins. The game is being developed by Nightmare Forge Games, which faced a lot of controversy upon its announcement, not just for using the character, but for some sensitive themes that led the developers to rename the game. These Steamboat Willie adaptations, including Screamboat, could perform well at the box office thanks to the inevitable curiosity around them, but in terms of quality, some of them are already on the wrong path with cliché storylines and poor character designs.
