Cyberpunk 2077 Concept Art Reveals The "Rail Gun" Cyberware

Cyberpunk 2077 Concept Art Reveals The "Rail Gun" Cyberware

Summary Creator Michael Michera shared the concept art of the rail gun Cyberware for Cyberpunk 2077, showcasing intricate details and a flip-out design for V's arm.

Despite not being included in the game, fans can still appreciate Michera's creative process and hope to see the rail gun in a future sequel.

It's unknown why the rail gun didn't make it into Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

Cyberpunk 2077 may already be loaded with bizarre Cyberware additions for V's arms, but one especially cool weapon, unfortunately, didn't make it into the game despite it looking incredible. Through players' journey through the seedy streets of Night City, they'll be given opportunities to modify their character's combat effectiveness with an assortment of strange augmentations for nearly every part of their body. While Mantis Blades are arguably the most iconic Cyberware option in the game, one tragically unused option may have usurped the angled swords if it made the cut: A mini Rail Gun.

Posted to their ArtStation account by creator Michael Michera, the artist shared a look at some concept images for a "Cyberware weapon system based on rail gun technology."

The augmentation would have seen V's arm flip apart, revealing two electromagnetic chargers on the sides with a massive barrel affixed between them. The design was initially created for the Phantom Liberty expansion and was ultimately not incorporated into the final game but Michera doesn't explain why CD Projekt Red opted to not include the Cyberware option in the shipped version of Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077's Unused Rail Gun Is Incredibly Cool

Seeing How It Was Designed Is Even Cooler

For fans interested in seeing how Michera went about creating the rail gun-inspired Cyberware, the artist also shared a detailed breakdown of their creative process, highlighting different stages of the build while also explaining why certain details stuck around and others were tweaked. Perhaps most impressive are the animated diagrams that illustrate how the rail gun would have been unsheathed and subsequently hidden away. The amount of effort that went into designing such a cool concept is staggering and is indicative of both Michera's talent and CDPR's vision for Cyberpunk 2077's aesthetic.

It's a pity that the rail gun Cyberware didn't make it into the game as it would have given players even more options to experiment with augmenting V's body. As it stands, only a handful of Cyberware options are available for arms and while one is considered to be especially powerful, the Gorilla Arms, the others are respected for their interesting appearances but fail to impress with lackluster stats. The only arm Cyberware that works as a firearm is the Projectile Launcher which launches a miniature missile; it's effective in a pinch but not the most interesting to look at.

The Cyberpunk 2077 can at least hope that Michera's excellent rail gun Cyberware option makes it into an official sequel. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that it's begun development of a follow-up, giving the project the codename "Orion." What the next game in the series will include is still unknown as the studio focuses most of its resources on The Witcher 4, but more updates on the game should be shared in the coming years.
