Cyclops & Madelyne Pryor Have A Shockingly Happy Ending In One X-Men Universe

Summary Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor's happy life is explored in Weapon X-Men #2, a refreshing departure from their usual tragic fate.

Earth-80777 provides a universe where Cyclops and Madelyne have a loving marriage, moving past Madelyne's origins as a clone.

Despite some drama and tragedy, Scott and Madelyne find happiness in retirement in this unique X-Men storyline.

Warning: contains spoilers for Weapon X-Men #2The infamous X-Men relationship between team leader Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor is being re-examined in the public eye after Madelyne's epic debut as the Goblin Queen in Marvel's X-Men '97 animated series. Scott and Madelyne are rarely shown to have a happy ending, but in Weapon X-Men #2, the ragtag team of Wolverine spend time in a universe where Cyclops and Pryor live a delightful, peaceful life.

Madelyne Pryor was revealed to be a clone of Jean Grey - created by Mister Sinister - after giving birth to her and Scott's son, the time-traveling Cable, and with influence from the demonic Limbo was transformed into the Goblin Queen, unleashing the disastrous Inferno on New York City.

While Madelyne has become an antihero in recent months, her relationship with Scott and Jean remains tense. Weapon X-Men #2, from writer Christos Gage with art by Yıldıray Çınar, depicts a lovely universe where Inferno never happened, baby Nate was never infected with the techno-organic virus, and Scott and Madelyne stayed married.

Weapon X-Men #2 (2024) Release Date: April 10th, 2024 Writers: Christos Gage Artists: Yıldıray Çınar, Clayton Cowles, Nolan Woodard Cover Artist: Dike Ruan, Neeraj Menon Variant Covers: Jan Bazaldua, Leinel Francis Yu ONE HAPPY WOLVERINE! But in one world — the very one that Onslaught has targeted next for annihilation — has a Wolverine unlike any other. A Wolverine… who got what he wanted. And for the Logan from Earth-X? That news just might be the claw in the coffin. The Phoenix's handpicked Band of Logans go to war!

Weapon X-Men Finally Illustrates Claremont's Original Dream For Cyclops

Chris Claremont, the longest-writing creator in X-Men history, planned on Madelyne's introduction being Scott Summers's way out of the X-Men and into retirement. Originally, Jean Grey's death in Dark Phoenix Saga was meant to be permanent and Madelyne wasn't created to be a clone of the hero. However, Marvel editorial eventually mandated that Jean be resurrected and Pryor retconned into a clone, ruining Claremont's plan for a happy ending, and leading to the devastating Inferno, which killed Madelyne and sent Nate into the future.

Weapon X-Men #2 depicts Earth-80777, a universe where Scott and Maddie have been married for 25 years, have a loving marriage and beautiful relationship with their son Nate, and have gotten past Madelyne's status as a clone of Jean. Not only does this universe have a happy ending for the Summers, but it also has Logan and his long-dead wife Mariko happily married with children, a true blessing for the tortured hero Wolverine. It is lovely to see a world where Scott and Madelyne are happy, and Cyclops is retired from superheroics, living a retired life of bliss and contentment.

Even A Happy Life For Scott And Madelyne Is Not Without Drama

Of course, because it is the X-Men, the visit by Jean Grey and her team of Wolverines brings plenty of drama and tragedy. While no one is killed, the powerful Nate Summers is possessed by Onslaught, forcing one of the Logans to cut off his arm, leading to him being infected with Warlock's techno-organic virus. Scott and Madelyne are furious at Jean for bringing this psychic monster into their midst, and ruining their son's engagement party, telling Jean to not return.

Still, compared to how these things usually go for the X-Men, this reality still has a shockingly happy ending for Cyclops and Madelyne. While we will probably never see a version of Earth-616 where Scott and Maddie have fully reconciled and fallen in love again, it is really wonderful to have bared witness to Earth-80777, where the X-Men's Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor got a truly peaceful ending.
