The excision of one major Inside Out 2 has been explained by the director. The upcoming Pixar movie is a sequel to their 2015 Oscar-winning movie, which anthropomorphized the emotions in the head of an adolescent girl named Riley who was undergoing a tough transition after her family moved from Minnesota to San Francisco. The movie included the emotions Anger, Fear, Disgust, Joy, and Sadness, and the sequel will add an even more layered ensemble that includes Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. However, the major emotion Shame, which was part of the original story, has been cut from the movie.

TheWrap recently spoke with director Kelsey Mann about the upcoming Inside Out 2 and why Shame was cut out of the movie. He revealed that the change was made to the story because the character was "not fun to watch." His intention was to create a movie that was both good and rewatchable, and though the emotion's inclusion would have been meaningful, he "did not want to return to that movie with that character," and thus endeavored to develop a more fun tone that would have audiences be more eager for repeat viewings. Read his full quote below:

[Shame] was not fun to watch. It was not fun. It was too heavy. You know when you see a good movie and you’re like, "Man that was a great movie." You want to see it again? "No, not really." There are movies like that. I don’t want to make that movie. I want to make a movie that’s really meaningful and when you’re asked, "Do you want to see that movie again?" You say, "Yes!" Because those are my favorite movies. And those are the kinds of movies I want to make. And I did not want to return to that movie with that character. It’s not that funny.

More to come...
