Rebel Moon 2's Abysmal Rotten Tomatoes Score Proves Netflix Is Focused On The Wrong Zack Snyder Franchise
Summary Rebel Moon 2's incredibly low Rotten Tomatoes score suggests Netflix should focus more on the Army of the Dead franchise.
No official confirmations surrounding Army of the Dead's future installment have been made, but the franchise deserves to be expanded more than Rebel Moon.
Rebel Moon 2 has an abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score, which highlights that Netflix has been focusing on the wrong Zack Snyder movie franchise. With several comic book adaptations and fantasy dramas like Watchmen and 300 under his belt, Zack Snyder is now well-known for his ability to bring visually stunning and entertaining fictional stories to the screen. Although he had a good reputation as a filmmaker even before he helmed films for the DCEU, the popularity and critical acclaim of his director's cut for Justice League helped him garner an even bigger following.
Owing to this, it was hard not to expect something epic and long-lasting when Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon was first announced. Unfortunately, the Rebel Moon movies, so far, have failed to even come close to the high expectations audiences initially had of them. Their terrible critical scores are proof of the imbalance between expectations and the delivered product. Not all hope is lost, however, since Netflix only needs to shift its focus to another Zack Snyder movie franchise.

Netflix Should Prioritize Zack Snyder's Army Of The Dead Franchise Instead Of Rebel Moon
Rebel Moon May Not Offer Long-Term Returns Because Of Its Reviews

Zack Snyder confirmed that Army of the Dead is set in the same universe as Rebel Moon. However, since the two movie franchises presently have little to no connective threads, it is hard not to see them as separate entities that significantly differ in quality. As the unanimously negative reviews of both Rebel Moon movies suggest, the film series is not as groundbreaking as it was initially touted to be. While the first Rebel Moon movie sits at an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes critics' score of 21%, the second one ranks even lower with its score of 18%.

The Rebel Moon movies' consistently poor reception suggests that Zack Snyder has been focusing on the wrong franchise. Army of the Dead, which premiered in 2021, was not a hit among critics. However, it earned positive reviews from the majority of viewers and still has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%. Even its spin-off prequel, Army of Thieves, was, by no means, a critical darling. However, it still managed to get respectable reviews from viewers and critics, highlighting how the Army of the Dead franchise has better long-term prospects than Rebel Moon.

Why Zack Snyder's Army Of The Dead Franchise Has Way Better Reviews Than Rebel Moon
Army Of The Dead Is A Unique Addition To Its Respective Genre

One of the biggest issues with Rebel Moon is that it set audience expectations too high even before its release. Since Zack Snyder initially scripted it as a Star Wars movie, it was hard not to expect it to be as grandiose in scale and scope (if not more) as the George Lucas films. Unfortunately, despite its best efforts to present a superior reimagining of the Star Wars movies, Rebel Moon falls short of leaving its mark in the sci-fi genre because it attempts to achieve a little too much in little time. It is further weighed down by its attempt to build a full-fledged franchise without even setting the right foundation for future films to rest on.

Army of the Dead has its own set of issues but avoids having many of Rebel Moon's shortcomings. Both installments in the Army of the Dead have self-contained narratives that allow them to stand on their own while still leaving some room for narrative expansion. Unlike Rebel Moon, which is constantly being compared with a well-established sci-fi franchise, Army of the Dead has established itself as a unique addition to the zombie sub-genre. This allows it to have its own distinct identity, preventing it from being compared with other big movie franchises.

Most Details Surrounding Army Of The Dead's Sequel Are Shrouded
Given how Zack Snyder previously confirmed that Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon unfold in the same universe, the two franchises may eventually cross over in future films. A direct sequel to Army of the Dead, titled Planet of the Dead, has also reportedly been in the works. However, since Zack Snyder has been busy working on the Rebel Moon movies, he has not been able to provide too many updates on the Army of the Dead sequel.
He confirmed (via The Nerd Queens), however, that the Army Universe is "still alive and well" in his mind. He added that he knows what needs to be done but is also treading carefully because big-scale franchises like these require a lot of attention. Unfortunately, no updates surrounding the Army of the Dead sequel's release window have been made yet. Hopefully, now that Rebel Moon 2 has premiered, Snyder will have more time on his hands to reveal his future plans for the franchise's cinematic universe and potential crossovers.
