"The Same Soul": Jujutsu Kaisen Finally Reveals Yuji's Origins

Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #257 of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Summary Jujutsu Kaisen chapter #257 reveals Sukuna had a twin who he ate in the womb who later reincarnated as Yuji's father Jin Itadori.

Sukuna reveals that he and the twin shared the same soul, a revelation set up through Maki and Mai's character arcs.

Kenjaku purposefully took over Kaori's body and mated with Yuji's father because he knew about Sukuna's twin's soul and to create the perfect vessel for the King of Curses.

Jujutsu Kaisen has finally revealed Yuji's origins and it reveals a shocking connection to Sukuna. Yuji's parentage has been the center of plenty of discussion, debate, and speculation among fans over the years and has inspired many fan theories. Yuji's mysterious origins and many of his inexplicable abilities make him one of the series' most mysterious characters despite being its protagonist. That said, the latest chapter finally sheds light on the mystery with a shocking revelation.

Chapter #257 of Jujutsu Kaisen finally reveals why Kenjaku chose to take over Yuji's mother's body, and the reason has more to do with Yuji's father than his mother, Kaori. The chapter reveals Yuji's father, Jin Itadori, carries the soul of Sukuna's twin whom Sukuna ate in the womb.

This would mean that Sukuna is in fact Yuji's paternal uncle, finally explaining their similarities in terms of appearance, which has been debated since the very start of the series. This revelation also finally explains why Kenjaku targeted the Itadori family specifically, while possibly explaining Yuji's suitability as a vessel for Sukuna as well as his unconventional strength and enhanced physical abilities, which have often been likened to that of a Heavenly Restriction.

In chapter #257, Sukuna reveals that he ate his twin in the womb, speculating that perhaps his mother was starving, which prompted him to do so. The chapter reveals that his twin's soul wandered around for thousands of years before manifesting in Jin Itadori and mating with Kenjaku. Though Jin does bear the same faint resemblance to Sukuna much like Yuji does, it is unclear how Kenjaku was able to detect that Sukuna's twin had been reborn.

Most interestingly, Sukuna refers to his twin as his "other half", claiming they possess the same soul, a concept which was fleshed out through Maki and Mai very early on in the series. However, unlike Maki and Mai, it appears the other half of Sukuna's soul might have had just as much potential as him which could have been passed down to Itadori as well.

Yuji Was Part of Kenjaku's Grand Scheme

This revelation also finally explains Sukuna's comment in chapter #214 about Kenjaku "doing the grossest things", as the latest chapter confirms taking over Kaori's body and mating with Jin was all part of Kenjaku's grand scheme to create a worthy vessel for Sukuna as well as a powerful player for the Culling Game. Kenjaku has been known to play the long game, as seen with Tsumiki Fushiguro so it doesn't come as much of a surprise that he might've been waiting for Sukuna's twin to reincarnate for thousands of years, regardless of how he obtained that information.

Overall, Yuji's peculiar origins and familial ties to Sukuna confirm that his fate was inextricably tied to Sukuna from the very start. Though Yuji's position as the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen has come under doubt in the past, it has become clear with the latest chapter that Yuji will indeed be the ultimate foil to Sukuna and may truly end up defeating him against all odds.
