The fusion of Green Lantern and Iron Man history influences design.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Green Lantern: War Journal #8!As Green Lantern takes on the biggest fight of his life, he's just forged a seriously cool set of Iron Man-like armor that needs to be seen to be believed. John Stewart might be trapped on the far side of the universe, but he's not down for the count yet.

John has always been one of the most practical Green Lanterns and has put his clever mind to good use and made some of the most intricate constructs in Corps history. Now that Stewart is facing one of the biggest threats to the DC Universe, he'll have to pull out a weapon that even Tony Stark would be proud of.

Green Lantern Has Just Created An Iron Man-Like Armor to Defend Himself

In Green Lantern: War Journal #8 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Montos, Adriano Lucas, and Dave Sharpe, Green Lantern Caolán Shepherd comes to Guy Gardner's last known address, hoping to get his help in finding John Stewart. However, upon arriving, Shepherd accidentally triggers a trap that turns Guy’s apartment into an interrogation room so Gardner can remotely grill Shepherd. Shepherd informs Guy that John has gone missing after his last battle with the Radiant Dead and without a second thought, Gardner agrees to help.

John creates a giant armor with a huge cannon attached to his arm.

On the far side of the DC Universe, John is caught up in the middle of a cosmic battle. In the orbit of the Dark Star of Fenn, terrifying extensions of the mad Old God Olgrun fight various castaways in search of the one they call the Exile. Things aren’t going well for the castaways, whose forces are nothing compared to Olgrun’s deadly foot soldiers. Thankfully, Green Lantern steps in to protect the survivors with a battalion of machine gun constructs.

Olgrun’s forces prove to be stronger than John is used to, so Green Lantern pushes himself and creates a much larger construct. John creates a giant armor with a huge cannon attached to his arm. As the dark army tells John that Olgruns will is inevitable, the Green Lantern uses his giant weaponry to blast every single member of the army, forcing them to retreat. John saves the day, but the army’s leader swears that though Green Lantern was victorious, they will return to claim the Exile.

Green Lantern's Design Skills Combine with His Godlike Power

Close

The Green Lantern Power Ring is one of the most useful weapons in the DC Universe. As long as someone has the appropriate amount of willpower, they can manifest anything they desire as a hard-light construct. While one doesn’t need to know all the details of what they create, a Lantern’s constructs often showcase how intimately a ring-wielder knows what they’re making. In John Stewart’s case, his past as an architect and his great familiarity with guns have helped the Green Lantern fashion some of the most well-designed constructs ever.

While John’s always gotten by with his intricate constructs, he got the upgrade of his life when he absorbed a powerful cosmic phenomenon known as a Godstorm. This made the Green Lantern one with the Source, the most powerful energy in the DC Universe, effectively making John the most powerful Lantern around. John was able to bring the Green Lantern Corps back from the brink of destruction and became the organization’s biggest source of power. While John was committed to empowering his allies, Stewart left the Green Lanterns after control was assumed by the United Planets.

While John tried to live a normal life once again, he had no choice but to return to active duty when the Radiant Dead invaded the DC Universe. As vestiges of the mad Old God, Olgrun, the Radiant Dead sought Stewart out, intent on using him as a vessel for Olgrun to inhabit. During a battle with the Radiant Dead, the Green Lantern was kidnapped and taken to a celestial object known as the Dark Star of Fenn, where Olgrun’s forces lie waiting to return.

Iron Man and Green Lantern's History Together

Aside from John’s knack for making intricately designed and powerful weapons, there’s a reason why Green Lantern leans so heavily into the Iron Man-inspired armor. Namely, because the two fused during the epic DC vs. Marvel crossover. Amalgam’s Hal Stark beautifully weaved Green Lantern and Iron Man’s history, resulting in one of the most identifiable characters from the period. This wasn’t the only time a Green Lantern got a Marvel-inspired upgrade as Kyle Rayner used the Cosmic Cube to become the only Chrome Lantern during JLA/Avengers.

Hal Stark was the star of his own Amalgam Comics one-shot, Iron Lantern #1 (1997)!

There’s a precedence for Green Lantern to take a bit of inspiration from the Marvel Universe’s biggest inventor, especially in recent years. Both recent issues of Green Lantern and Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong have shown various Green Lanterns constructing similar armors (though John’s is the closest to looking like something Tony Stark would actually wear). To be fair, if anyone from the Marvel Universe would make for a good Green Lantern, it’d be Iron Man, whose willpower and imagination have helped him make amazing things without a Power Ring.

Given the threat that the Radiant Dead present, it’d make sense for John to have a reliable, go-to construct that he can pull out (other than his usual array of highly-detailed guns). John’s armor is huge, powerful and looks like it could take on more powerful threats than usual. The Radiant Dead aren’t going to stop until they break free and take control of John, so what better construct to use than a giant armor that just so happens to resemble one of the greatest Marvel heroes?

Green Lantern and Iron Man are a Perfect Combination

Green Lantern and Iron Man are both about putting their minds to work and creating weaponry that can fight the threats no one else can. John Stewart might not have had Tony Stark in mind when he created this amazing armor, but it’s a solid reminder of what the two heroes have in common. Hopefully, as John continues to fight the Radiant Dead, he’ll lean back into this construct to assist him as Olgrun’s forces continue to rise. Green Lantern is facing a hard fight, but it could be a lot easier with his new Iron Man-like armor.
