I'm Very Worried About Transformers One After Major $1.3 Billion Movie Franchise Announcement
Summary Transformers One's trailer sets a child-friendly tone for the animated origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron.
The announcement of an R-rated TMNT movie makes Transformers One's lighthearted tone appear less appealing to fans.
Despite initial disappointment, the TMNT franchise proves that Transformers One could still work with the right execution thanks to Mutant Mayhem.
Transformers One's trailer has caused a few reservations to rise, especially when contrasted against an announcement about another Paramount franchise worth $1.3 billion. The Transformers prequel has been confirmed for a 2024 release date for a while, with the first trailer for Transformers One offering audiences a first look at the story. Starring Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime/Orion Pax and Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron/D-16, Transformers One's Autobot and Decepticon origin story is a CG-animated take on the iconic franchise.
Transformers One is currently set for release on September 20, 2024.
The team roster for Transformers One will be familiar to many, though the film itself looks like a very different take on the titular Cybertronians. Perhaps the biggest difference is the film's tone, which sports more of a lighthearted, child-friendly, buddy-cop dynamic than many were expecting. While this tone could undoubtedly work in animated format, one recent announcement from Paramount concerning another of the studio's most successful franchises causes worries around Transformers One to grow.

The announcement in question surrounds the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, specifically the confirmation of a film adaptation titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. This story is set to be an R-rated film within the TMNT universe which is usually associated with a less mature tone. With this announcement, Paramount is proving that the studio is open to darker, more mature takes on beloved franchises.

Unfortunately, this makes the tone of Transformers One look worse by comparison. The idea of an animated origin story of Megatron and Optimus Prime certainly sounded interesting, yet the tone of the film's first trailer felt jarring given its departure from the recent style of Transformers movies. If Paramount had not announced TMNT: The Last Ronin as an R-rated feature only a week before Transformers One's trailer was released, the lighthearted tone of the latter may not have felt so disappointing.
TMNT Ironically Proves Transformers One Could Still Work
Despite this disappointment, it would be unwise - not to mention unfair - to judge Transformers One before the film is released. Ironically, the TMNT franchise has proven recently how Transformers One could work. While TMNT: The Last Ronin's R-rated, promisingly more gritty style could benefit the Transformers franchise, the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem proves a lighthearted tone can work while still remaining emotionally resonant.
Released in the summer of 2023, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem portrayed the turtles as they are supposed to be: teenagers. This caused the film to have a more comedic tone, appealing to children more than the likes of Michael Bay's live-action TMNT films or even 2007's TMNT. Despite this tone, Mutant Mayhem ranks among the best TMNT movies. While a more mature take on Transformers One would have been more compelling, as is TMNT: The Last Ronin's announcement, the latter franchise has ironically proved how the former could still work if handled correctly.
