"Pitiful": Boruto's Ultimate Insult To Kawaki Officially Addresses The Series' Biggest Issue
Summary Boruto humiliates Kawaki, highlighting that the series is moving away from the issue of characters relying on power-ups instead of hard work.
Boruto refuses to rely on Otsutsuki power, focusing on training with Sasuke to become stronger.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex learns from Naruto's lesson of hard work triumphing over luck and talent.
In chapter 9 of the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga, Boruto completely humiliates Kawaki and questions if the latter has trained at all after the last time they met. It seems that the former Kara member, confident in the power granted to him by the Karma mark, has forgotten to make an effort to become stronger. Boruto, on the other hand, took his training with Sasuke and Koji seriously, becoming several times stronger.
While these words may seem like a simple insult from an angry and disappointed Boruto, they reflect one of the series’ main issues. In an attempt to increase the tension when compared to the original Naruto series, Boruto’s story tried to make its characters extremely powerful. The characters, however, rarely ever work for their power-ups, a complaint that has been brought up by fans countless times in the past.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Is Fixing One of the Main Issues of Boruto
Boruto refuses to rely on the power of others
The Otsutuki clan has always been a controversial addition to the Naruto and Boruto universes. While the threat of nearly immortal aliens makes for a more engaging and entertaining story, it also creates a problem as to how the heroes will deal with these enemies. This is exactly what happened to Boruto, with the protagonist of the series needing to be granted powerful techniques to fight these antagonists. Before the timeskip, Boruto and Kawaki relied more on their Karma marks than on their ninja training.
Boruto insulting Kawaki for becoming complacent and neglecting his training is not only a dig at his former friend, but also how the series addresses its main issue. Naruto’s son no longer wants to rely on the power given to him by the Otsutsuki. Boruto has come back with a plethora of powerful techniques after the time spent with Sasuke first, and Koji Kashin later, realizing how much better it is to become stronger by one's means. While this does not guarantee that abilities like the Karma mark will not be important in the series’ future, it is a step in the right direction.
Two Blue Vortex Is Learning From Naruto’s Biggest Lesson
The original series always exalted the importance of hard work
Close
One of the most important messages from the original Naruto series was that hard work would always triumph over luck and talent. The Seventh Hokage was never as naturally gifted as Sasuke or as intelligent as Shikamaru. Nonetheless, he trained tirelessly to reach the power level he has today. Other ninjas like Rock Lee, who cannot use any kind of Ninjutsu or Genjutsu, further prove that discipline and training are more important than anything in the world of Naruto. The Boruto series lost sight of this tenant of its universe for a long time.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has a chance to make up for its previous failures by making its protagonist shine due to his preparation rather than by using powers gifted to him. Naruto’s son has already shown his growth as a fighter in previous chapters of the series. The story could make an example of Kawaki, who does not seem willing to admit that his Karma mark is not enough to be considered strong. This conclusion to their conflict would fit perfectly with the original themes upon which the franchise was created.
The Boruto series may not be perfect, as several fans have criticized it in the past. However, it seems that Kishimoto is now trying to bring back the important lessons that Naruto taught readers years ago. It will be important for the series to keep this in mind and not fall back into its ways by making Boruto reliant on Momoshiki’s power again.
