That Cillian Murphy Far Cry 7 Tease Isn't What You Thought
Summary A leaker shared an image of award-winning actor Cillian Murphy as part of a potential Far Cry 7 post, leading to speculation among fans.
It has since been confirmed that Murphy will not be in the game.
Instead, this could be referring to Murphy's portrayal of Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, and how that ties into the storyline from Far Cry 5 and New Dawn
A Far Cry 7 tease involving the Academy Award-winning actor, Cillian Murphy, led to plenty of speculation about whether he'd be playing a role in the yet-to-be-announced open-world FPS sequel. The previous entry in the series, Far Cry 6 saw Breaking Bad and The Mandalorian's Giancarlo Esposito playing a ruthless dictator, which could be the main reason fans thought Ubisoft may have gone for another high-profile actor to headline its sequel, but it turns out this isn't the case.
While Ubisoft hasn't officially announced Far Cry 7, recent job listings indicated that it is in active development.
On April 20, j0nathan, a YouTuber and streamer who leaked a huge amount of information surrounding last year's Assassin's Creed Mirage, shared four images to his X account: a photo of Murphy, dynamite with a 72-hour countdown on it, a crab, and the number "7". This led to many believing the 7 stood for Far Cry 7, and the 72-hour countdown is leading to an announcement of some kind, potentially with Murphy in a leading role.
Since then, j0nathan has shared an update to the post that debunks the latter theory, stating, "Attention: I NEVER said Cillian Murphy was going to be in the game. The image means something else."

What Could Cillian Murphy's Image Mean For Far Cry 7?
Could Far Cry Be Returning To The New Dawn Timeline?
Close
If Murphy isn't going to be in the game, the image could be referencing one of the roles he has played in other media. The most obvious link would be between Murphy's portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer - for which he received many awards - in last year's Oppenheimer, as there is one timeline in the Far Cry universe in which America was hit by nuclear destruction. Sharing a picture of Oppenheimer himself likely would have been too obvious of a clue.
Far Cry 5's shocking ending showed that the game's primary antagonist, cult leader Joseph Seed was proven right about his views involving an upcoming doomsday when the bombs detonated. New Dawn picked up seventeen years later in a world still reeling from the fallout of this, with a post-apocalyptic Far Cry entry that set itself apart from some of the others in the series. Therefore, with Oppenheimer being referred to as "the father of the atomic bomb", it's possible the series could be returning to this storyline.
Of course, this is all speculation at this point, but if j0nathan's countdown is accurate, players should have some more concrete information regarding Far Cry 7 within the coming day or so. Returning to the New Dawn storyline would set it apart from the more grounded Far Cry 6, however, and may be a good move for the franchise to offer more variety by alternating between its futuristic dystopian tales and its modern, more grounded threats.
