Universal’s New Horror Movie Confirms Dracula’s Perfect Character Replacement After 127 Years
Summary Abigail showcases an exciting way to update older Universal characters like Dracula
Abigail's critical success proves that the movie's main character can lead a franchise moving forwards
Abigail's age poses a potential problem for future installments
The 2024 horror comedy Abigail is a refreshing update to the tired vampire horror subgenre, potentially showing the best way for Universal to replace its most iconic character. Starring Alisha Weir as the titular child-like monster, the movie has been a huge hit with critics, scoring an impressive 88% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. However, while isolated success is exciting, it is Abigail's potential as a franchise starter that will prove particularly noteworthy for Universal.
A loose remake of the classic Universal Classic Monsters movie Dracula's Daughter, Abigail is an irreverent reimagining of the original material. Alisha Weir, who was 13 years old at the time of filming, plays the titular antagonist, who is quickly revealed to be a ballet-dancing vampire of mysterious origin. The movie, and particularly Weir's performance as Abigail, has been generally acclaimed, highlighting the new character's prospective appeal. However, after multiple indifferent releases based on Universal properties in recent years, the movie also potentially signposts a great way for the studio to replace one of its most recognizable IPs.

Abigail Is The Perfect Dracula Replacement For Universal's Future Monster Movies

Abigail's successful release in a horror subgenre that has struggled in recent years proves that the movie's titular character may be the ideal figure to replace Dracula after 127 years of big-screen success. As one of the most recognizable literary and cinematic creations of all time, Dracula has a movie heritage that few characters can match. However, a string of mediocre releases has suggested that the time has come to think about the best way to reimagine the notorious Count's popular image, with Agibail providing an ideal template.
Recent releases, such as Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, have relied on a somewhat traditional depiction of Dracula for their main monster. However, both movies continue a trend of Dracula-centric vampire movies underperforming critically and commercially. By contrast, Abigail is a genuinely innovative take on the familiar subject matter, with the movie providing a charismatic new figure who could potentially carry the franchise forward. As a magnetic screen presence with a fascinating and conflicted backstory, she could be a great way for Universal to tell Dracula-like stories, without featuring the eponymous Transylvannian.

Abigail's Survival Makes Her Perfect For A Potential Dark Universe Reboot

To make matters even more convenient for Universal, Abigail's ending provides the perfect setup for future movies with Abigail in the lead. The final scenes not only showcase her potential as a hero as well as a villain but also emphasize her conflict with her mysterious father figure (presumed to be the real Dracula). This degree of separation both establishes Abigail within the world of Universal monsters, but also identifies her as something new.
Abigail's father is played by Matthew Goode in a surprise ending cameo
This independence, coupled with the success of the movie's somewhat tongue-in-cheek approach, means that Abigail is the ideal launchpad for a Dark Universe reboot. After the total failure of Tom Cruise's The Mummy and recent disappointments starring a more traditional Dracula, the studio needed a fresh perspective to make the most of its potentially lucrative properties. Abigail could simultaneously be the ideal character to return in an expanded series and provide a framework for other characters to be reinvented.
Abigail's Dark Universe Future Has One Unavoidable Problem

The character's successful introduction, charisma, and critical popularity undoubtedly mean that Abigail has long-lasting potential for Universal. However, one detail about the character makes a recurring role potentially problematic – specifically, the character's age. Given that, canonically, vampires are supposed to be immortal, and Abigail already revealed that she is centuries old, it follows that her appearance shouldn't change from film to film. This would make it difficult for Alisha Weir to play her in later installments without creating some problematic inconsistencies – especially further down the line.
Part of what made Abigail so compelling is the juxtaposition between her childlike appearance and her capacity for extreme violence. Unless this is maintained, future films will lose much of their impact. There's no doubt that Abigail has delivered an exciting update to a character and subgenre that has recently struggled to escape the legacy of its illustrious past. However, without some clever storytelling or almost instantaneous plans for an extended franchise, the character may struggle to match the impact of her first film appearance.
