Christian Slater, Sarah Cooper & Max Greenfield On The Jolly Insanity Of Jerry Seinfeld's Unfrosted

Summary Unfrosted, a comedy about the invention of Pop-Tarts, features a star-studded cast including Jerry Seinfeld, Hugh Grant, and Amy Schumer.

The movie is full of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously, focusing on getting laughs and entertaining the audience.

Screen Rant's interview with the supporting cast reveals insights into the fun and chaotic production process of Unfrosted.

The idea of making a movie out of the invention of the Pop-Tart may seem outlandish, but any fan of Jerry Seinfeld knows that "outlandish" is where comedy thrives. Unfrosted, releasing May 3 on Netflix, turns the invention of the tasty breakfast treat into a grandiose epic on the scale of the Space Race, complete with corporate espionage, sugar-selling kingpins, and, of course, the threat of nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union.

Jerry Seinfeld stars, directs, and co-writes the 1960s-set comedy, and Unfrosted's supporting cast includes a veritable who's who of famous faces. Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, and Melissa McCarthy all make appearances, as well as some top-secret special guest stars we dare not spoil here.

Screen Rant sat down with three of the supporting cast members to interview them about their work on Unfrosted. Heathers heartthrob Christian Slater plays a shady milkman, comedian Sarah Cooper stars as a Kellogg's mainstay, and New Girl alum Max Greenfield appears as an agent of Post Cereal. What follows is a deeply nuanced conversation about the complex themes and literary gravitas of Unfrosted... Or something along those lines.

The Cast Of Unfrosted On Bowties And Hair Gel

Close

Screen Rant: Hey you guys! This movie's so funny! So concerned with getting the laugh. I feel like that's Jerry's mantra, and it rings true here.

Christian Slater: Pretty crazy. He has built a life on doing that, so yes.

Screen Rant: Jerry Seinfeld is making his first movie in 20 years, it's not a cartoon, and he's directing it. Someone reaches out to you... How could anyone say no to that?

Sarah Cooper: You can't. Max Greenfield: I don't think anybody did! Christian Slater: Exactly. You hear Jerry Seinfeld's making a movie... Max Greenfield: [Gesturing towards himself and Sarah] We auditioned for it. So we were like, "I'll do whatever you want me to do to be in this. Sarah Cooper: Literally, I'll do whatever, to be in it! Max Greenfield: Based on the cast that is in this movie, I don't think anybody said no! Sarah Cooper: He got everybody he wanted. And you can tell in the casting, every single person is perfect. Christian Slater: Look, in a way, I kinda had to audition for it because I had to do the script reading over Zoom, you know? Max Greenfield: This is Christian's nice way of... "Hey, we're all the same!" Christian Slater: I was auditioning! It was the first time I had read it! I just said to myself, "Don't try to be funny. Don't try to be cute. Just do it. These guys are the professionals, and just do my part."

Maybe you draw the short end of the stick, Christian having to dress as a milkman. Although, I'd say milkmen are secretly super sexy. Everyone has a fear that their dad is possibly the milkman.

Christian Slater: There ya go! See? Ya know? There's something going on there. Sarah Cooper: Wait a second... That's deep! Christian Slater: I didn't even think about that, but you're right! Sarah Cooper: You think he was sleeping with all the housewives?

I mean, you've seen the bowtie...

Christian Slater: That's a winner, right there. See, I didn't really have to do anything. That outfit was the character. And that really brought it to life for me.

Sarah, was it a relief at the end of the day to switch into your regular 21st-century clothes, or did you enjoy the '60s outfits? And the hair!

Sarah Cooper: I didn't want to take off any of it. And the hair. I can't wait to share the behind-the-scenes pictures I took, because I would go back to my trailer and just take pictures [laughs] because I have a whole... Me dancing to songs in my trailer in my outfit! I loved the clothes and the hair so much. Max Greenfield: The clothes and the hair on the women is so much better than the men.

Did you have enough gel?

Max Greenfield: Yeah, it's a rough end of the day, when you're like... Christian Slater: Remember that stuff? "Dep," or whatever it was. Max Greenfield: Super intense. And to get this (gestures towards his hair) down that way, it's a lot. Christian Slater: Brill cream. Brill cream. Sarah Cooper: He almost quit over it. Christian Slater: "Don't touch the hair!" Max Greenfield: I didn't almost quit over it. It was just... It's the end of the day. It was difficult to wash it out of my hair. Sarah Cooper: I'm sorry, I wasn't supposed to say that. Christian Slater: Every day, at the end, was relief. That's all it was. Just a relief. Max Greenfield: Oh, that was a bit? Sarah Cooper: That was a bit.

Unfrosted Stars Get Screen Rant's Take On The Movie

Before the interview closed out, Greenfield had a very important question:

Max Greenfield: Hold on, I have a question. You're from Screen Rant, right? So you guys watch movies all the time.

We do.

Max Greenfield: Yeah. This has a totally different vibe. Was it, like, sort of a breath of fresh air for you? What was your take? I'm so curious.

Oh my gosh, it's so funny! It's... Just... In the absolute best way, "just funny."

Max Greenfield: It's so different from everything out there. Sarah Cooper: Yeah. It doesn't make you think.

It doesn't care what you think, it doesn't care about anything except getting the laugh.

Christian Slater: It is true to itself, for sure.

Let's have Bobby Moynihan do a funny Italian accent. Boom. Just do it.

Max Greenfield: That's a really good way to put it. It doesn't care what you think. I think that's really smart.

Whatever baggage anyone has, even, like, Jim Gaffigan looking at the paper, going, "Vietnam, that's interesting. Whatever." Even, dare I say, if there's even a grassy knoll joke at some point.

Christian Slater: Somewhere in there, of course!

It is not concerned with, "Oh my God, that is so offensive to JFK." He's over it. Jackie O is over it.

Christian Slater: Time. Time equals comedy... What's the line? Comedy plus... Sarah Cooper: Tragedy plus time equals comedy. Christian Slater: Thank you! God, we were good! What a team we are!
