Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Season 2 Niles Update Exposes The Harsh Truth About The Reboot

Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Season 2 Niles Update Exposes The Harsh Truth About The Reboot

Summary The Frasier reboot may see Niles return in a one-off cameo but don't expect a true sequel.

Kelsey Grammer maintains that the door is open for David Hyde Pierce to return as Niles, but he will unlikely be a series regular.

Despite storytelling limitations, the Frasier revival can still be better by honoring the original with core messaging and storytelling tricks.

The latest update about Niles' chances of appearing in the Frasier reboot season 2 reveals the harsh truth about the Parmaount+ project. After Frasier reboot's first 10 episodes, Kelsey Grammer's beloved psychiatrist-turned-Harvard educator will continue his adventures in Boston, as he attempts to make up for his failures in the city three decades ago. Coming back to his old Cheers stomping grounds has been divisive, especially since the new show barely acknowledges his history of nightly drinking at Sam Malone's underground bar. Besides that, it also gives the Frasier reboot an excuse to not feature his old Seattle ensemble.

Frasier's final act in Boston was kickstarted with a family tragedy, as the Cranes lose Martin — in light of John Mahoney's death in 2018. Inspired by his own experience reconnecting with his father, Frasier decided to move to Beantown to mend his fractured relationship with his son, Freddy. The change of setting allows the Frasier reboot to get away with not featuring other family members, especially Niles. In reality, David Hyde Pierce, alongside Daphne actor, Jane Leeves turned down Grammer's invitation to appear. However, with Frasier reboot season 2 underway, there's still a chance to see Frasier's brother.

Pierce’s Potential Niles Appearance In Frasier Season 2 Will Just Be A Cameo

Grammer Promises To Make It Work If Pierce Decides To Return As Niles.

Pierce has been busy with other endeavors in the last couple of years. That being said, the recent cancelation of HBO's Julia should allow him to devote some time to partaking in the Frasier reboot — if ever he changes his mind about appearing in the series. Long before the Paramount+ project. the actor has already been adamant about not wanting to revive Frasier, explaining that it would risk ruining the legacy of the original show. More recently, Pierce doubled down on his stance on not returning, saying that the Frasier reboot is doing just fine without him.

The idea of seeing the Crane brothers together again on the screen two decades after they separated in Seattle is thrilling for anyone who loved the original show. Unfortunately, Grammer also issues a caution about expectations.

That being said, nothing is impossible, and if Pierce alters his stance on returning, Grammer says that the Frasier reboot will make sure to feature Niles. The idea of seeing the Crane brothers together again on the screen two decades after they separated in Seattle is thrilling for anyone who loved the original show. Unfortunately, Grammer also issues a caution about expectations. While the door will always be open for Niles to appear, he warns that his involvement will likely just be limited to a one-episode appearance, similar to Bebe Neuwirth and Peri Gilpin's return as Lilith and Roz.

Paramount+’s Frasier Can Never Be A Continuation Of The Original Series

It's Nearly Impossible For The Frasier Reboot To Be A True Sequel Show.

For context, the original idea for the Frasier reboot was to see the Crane brothers run a black box theater. Grammer had to change course when it became clear that Pierce wasn't returning as Niles. That was when he got the idea of seeing Frasier back in Boston. With season 2 underway, there's additional time to make Niles' much-anticipated happen. However, even if Pierce returns, the Frasier reboot could still not be a true continuation of the original show because the revival has just way too many differences compared to its predecessor.

At best, Paramount+'s Frasier reboot can honor the legacy of the Seattle series by making sure that it stays true to its core messaging. It can also try to tap into the tried and tested storytelling tricks that the old show used for years. Unfortunately, even if Pierce comes back, a one-off appearance isn't nearly enough to recapture the feeling of the original Frasier. Sure, it would be nice to see him reunite with Frasier, but viewers shouldn't have any expectations that his limited involvement will instantly change the revival to be a true sequel series.

How Frasier Reboot Season 2 Can Fix Season 1's Issues

The Frasier Reboot Has A Couple Of Ways To Make Season 2 Better.

Just because the Frasier revival cannot come close to its parent series, it doesn't mean that there's nothing it can do to be better. There were so many good things from its initial run, starting with Grammer still incredibly brilliant as the titular character. Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier's best friend, Alan Cornwall offers a unique storytelling opportunity that hasn't been done in Cheers or the old show. Moving forward, the revival should devote more time to exploring the pair's dynamic.

Elsewhere, the writers should find a way to make Frasier's Harvard arc interesting. His current job doesn't allow the sitcom to showcase the character's best asset, which is his genuine interest in helping others — sometimes, even at his expense. This was the reason why, despite all his absurdity in the original series, it was difficult not to love him as a character. The Frasier revival must find a way to bring this aspect back in their future storytelling.

Frasier reboot season 1 can be streamed on Paramount+.
