The Fall Guy, inspired by the 1980s television series of the same name, follows a stuntman named Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) who is pulled back into Hollywood after stepping away due to a career-ending injury. But when he gets the chance to work with the one who got away, first-time director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), he jumps right back in. While working to win back her affection and pull off an impossible stunt, he also begins investigating the disappearance of the movie's lead, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

Leitch utilizes his skills and knowledge as a stuntman and stunt coordinator in his directing style, making The Fall Guy a love letter to his career in Hollywood while also playing with numerous genres. Screen Rant interviewed Gosling and Blunt about The Fall Guy. Blunt discussed Leitch's skills as a director, how Leitch and Kelly McCormick were real-life inspirations for herself and Gosling, and the meta aspect of the movie. Gosling praised the stunt team of The Fall Guy, calling them the unsung heroes of filmmaking, while also comparing his character in this movie to his now-iconic character of Ken from Barbie.

Who Inspired Emily Blunt & Ryan Gosling's The Fall Guy Performances

The Fall Guy is, in many ways, Leitch's love letter to his time in the film industry and his journey from stunt performer to director. While they are part of some of the best moments in the history of cinema, stunt performers and the incredible work they put into these projects are often overlooked. Gosling shines a light on them with his character in The Fall Guy, but he was also quick to praise them for their dedication and outstanding stunts in The Fall Guy.

Ryan Gosling: I was like, "You know what guys, you got this. I'll be over here if you need me." I was very happy to be the first actor to say I did none of my own stunts in this movie. I was very happy to leave it to the professionals. I've had a stunt double probably my whole life. And there's always this strange moment where they come in, they do all the cool stuff, they get none of the credit, they leave, and then we sort of pretend like I did it. It's just so fun and such an honor to be a part of something that shines light on them and shows them to be the real unsung heroes of the industry. Records were broken in this movie. David is obviously a former stunt guy, so he just surrounded us with the best of the best and the film really does become a love letter to the stunt community and their legacy.

Blunt shared how Leitch and McCormick, as a married couple and creative partners, were a huge inspiration for herself and Gosling on set. She also praised Leitch's skills as a director relaying how some of the most influential directors of our time have asked him how he pulled off certain shots and stunts.

Emily Blunt: The two of them were a real inspiration and a source of love for everyone on set because they're married in real life. They're an amazing couple. They were kind of inspiring for Ryan and me. It was really inspirational to be watching them work together and they're so collaborative. It's the idea of enjoying the chaos on set, the aliveness, and the beauty that comes out of that. They're both open-hearted. They've got spirited opinions about stuff, but it doesn't handcuff anything anyone else might bring to the table. I'm not sure [if] there could have been a better director for this movie because he understands stunts better than anybody. He's lived that life. He knows how to celebrate them. He also knows how to shoot stunts so brilliantly. He shoots action like nobody else. He said one time it was very beautiful to him that both Chris Nolan and Steven Spielberg have taken him aside separately, going, "So how did you do this and how did you shoot that?" David's so humble that he's like, "I can't believe these directors are talking to me like I'm on their level." But I was like, "You are." And maybe David will always have the humility of a stunt man. He's got that selflessness and that sweetness to him, and he's just lethally brilliant at what he does.

Ryan Gosling'sThe Fall Guy Character Admires Emily Blunt's "Just As Much As Ken Admires Barbie"

Gosling took the world by storm last year in his role as Ken, even performing the ballad "I'm Just Ken" at the Oscars. While his character in The Fall Guy is very different, both utilize his comedic skills. Gosling discussed how he utilized certain elements of Ken in The Fall Guy, comparing his two characters and joking that Ken finally had the opportunity to actually "beach."

Ryan Gosling: I got to actually beach in this, which was nice. I think he's Kenning very hard for Jody's Barbie. So that was good prep because I had to Ken his heart as I could. Emily Blunt: I feel like she's not as nice as Barbie though. I feel like she's not as receptive in the beginning as Barbie's more open-hearted, maybe. Ryan Gosling: He admires her just as much as Ken admires Barbie. She's his north star. And he really gets to beach finally. I still don't know what that actually is, but he gets- Emily Blunt: Ken doesn't know, it's okay. He doesn't know either. Ryan Gosling: But this was a little different in that it was sort of, we were able to feather in what was happening on the movie into the comedy of the movie. For instance, we didn't really know how our movie was going to end. Because it was so stunt dependent, and we were trying to figure out if we were going to be able to make this jump, were we going to be able to break these records? What was the weather going to be? So we were always working towards what the real ending of our film would be. And at a certain point we were like, "Oh, let's just put that in the movie." So then it became an opportunity for our characters to try and figure out what was going to happen in her movie.
