Severance Season 2's Tumultuous Production Explained

Its Co-Showrunners Had A Falling Out

According to a report, co-showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman had a falling out during season 1.

Severance premiered on Apple TV+ in February 2022 to rave reviews for its intriguing and mysterious premise, earning a near-percent 97% score from the critics and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 1 also received 14 nominations at the 2022 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nominations for Adam Scott, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. In turn, even before season 1 finished airing, it was a no-brainer for Apple TV+ to renew the series for a second season.

However, Severance season 2 experienced many issues in its attempt to return to the small screen. According to a report, co-showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman had a falling out during season 1, and the latter required persuasion from principal director and executive producer Ben Stiller to return for season 2. However, further conflict between the showrunners caused difficulties in script development and budget management, so House of Cards creator Beau Willimon was reportedly brought on to smooth things over. Furthermore, season 2 shut down production during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, resulting in further delays.

Severance season 2 resumed filming in late January 2024 and was seemingly able to finish without any more major problems. In turn, season 2's tumultuous production shouldn't affect the overall quality of the upcoming episodes. Much of the main cast is expected to return, with Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie and Arrested Development's Alia Shawka among the many new cast members. Now that filming has wrapped on Severance season 2, Apple TV+ should announce a release date in the near future, revealing when the long wait for new episodes will finally come to an end.

What To Expect From Severance Season 2

Cast, Story, & More

Close

Severance season 2 should explore more of the many mysteries surrounding Lumon.

Over the course of season 1, Severance gradually introduced its dystopian sci-fi world in which the cult-like Lumon Corporation uses the eponymous program to separate their employees' memories into two – an "innie" for work life and an "outie" for personal life, with no interaction between the two. It was because of this captivating premise that the series became a big hit for Apple TV+, and also sparked several Severance fan theories in the process. The first season predominantly follows the four curious and resentful innies of the Macro-Data Refinement department who discover deeper conspiracies within the system.

However, the story of Severance is just beginning, with many unresolved plot threads leading into the high anticipation for season 2, despite its delays. Though no official details have been revealed about season 2's storyline, there are several hints from the first season that offer some setup. The Severance season 1 ending sees the innies in the Macro-Data Refinement department gaining control of their outies thanks to the "Overtime Contingency" in their Lumon Severance chips. This brief period of freedom is expected to have some lasting consequences, as Lumon will likely respond harshly to the MDR's rebellion.

Severance season 2 should explore more of the many mysteries surrounding Lumon, mainly what happened to Mark's wife Gemma, who appears in the workplace as Ms. Casey. Season 2 should also explore the company's broader plans for the Severance chips and more of the outies' lives, including Irving's intriguing backstory. Furthermore, creator Dan Erickson has hinted that season 2's antagonist will be Helena Eagan, who is known as Helly inside the workplace and is the daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan.

By picking up directly after season 1's dramatic cliffhanger ending, Severance season 2 should see the return of much of the main cast. These include the four actors who make up the MDR department – Adam Scott as Mark, Zach Cherry as Dylan, Britt Lower as Helly, and John Turturro as Irving. Patricia Arquette's Harmony, the manager of the severed floor, and Tramell Tillman's Seth, the supervisor on the severed floor, are also expected to return.

Severance season 2 has also added several new cast members in undisclosed roles. They include Gwendoline Christie, Alia Shawkat, Bob Balaban, Merrit Wever, Robby Benson, Stefano Carannante, John Noble, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson. With much of the main cast returning, new faces who are sure to make an impression, and a story that picks up directly after season 1's dramatic cliffhanger ending, Severance season 2 is sure to be another smash hit for Apple TV+.
