The franchise's direction is currently uncertain as it was reported that another reboot movie was in development after the disappointing 2017 movie.

The Fall Guy director David Leitch has spoken about his past role in the Power Rangers and a potential return to the franchise. With a franchise that began in 1993, Power Rangers followed a bunch of teen superheroes battling to protect their town of Angel Grove from evil forces. Leitch, a stunt performer himself and occasional actor, had a small role in the episode "Up to the Challenge" in Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue, the franchise's eighth season.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, discussing The Fall Guy's impending release, Leitch looked back on his acting career, specifically his role as Brian in the hit franchise Power Rangers. The Bullet Train director also discussed how he would be open to a return to the franchise in the future. Read his comments below:

"Wow. Yeah, I played Brian, a troubled teen who got possessed, on Power Rangers. You have to go way back to see mine. I fought Mike Chat, though. It's a fun fight scene. That being said, I'll never say never. I think that it could be a really fun world, and it'd be fun to update that. I know that they are, I'm sure that IP is out there and there's people developing it. So give me a call."

The last Power Rangers feature film was the 2017 live-action reboot, which was a critical and commercial disappointment.

Power Rangers is a franchise that has continued to evolve and grow over time, airing 30 different seasons of 22 different themed series and three theatrical movies. The multi-billion dollar franchise has the scope to continue producing content for years to come, and bringing in creatives like Leitch would only help the franchise grow. The capacity in which the director might be involved remains unclear at this point.

While it seems likely there will be no new Power Rangers show in 2024, it seems probable the franchise is in a transitional period. A film director like Leitch would probably not be involved in any future TV show, but he could be involved in a live-action movie adaptation. The last Power Rangers feature film was the 2017 live-action reboot, which was a critical and commercial disappointment. This led to the sequels being cancelled and sparked plans for a reboot movie.

The Red Ranger star of the 2017 movie, Dacre Montgomery, shared in an AMA Reddit post that the second Power Rangers reboot movie would happen without him while the remaining cast would return. It was also reported that the latest reboot would take place in the 1990s and incorporate time travel as part of the story. It's uncertain if the direction is still as intended or if those ideas have shifted. The last update on the reboot was in 2020, when Jonathan Entwistle was named as a director, with Bryan Edward Hill writing the script.

Power Rangers is available to stream on Netflix.

For now, any talk of a Leitch return to the Power Rangers franchise feels premature, given that recent developments on the reboot movie have been quiet. Alongside the promotion of his new movie, the director is busy as a producer for the 2025 film With Love. Still, the franchise continues to be one of the most successful in the world, and Leitch could be the perfect choice for a future Power Rangers movie reboot.
