Andor Season 1 Real-World Parallels Revealed By Star Diego Luna In New BTS Featurette

Summary Diego Luna's decision to keep distance from the cast in "Andor" mirrors the show's focus on authenticity and everyday individuals.

"Andor" breaks the mold by exploring the Rebellion through non-Jedi heroes, highlighting the real experiences of everyday people.

The innovative tone and thematic focus of "Andor" is set to continue in Season 2, promising more groundbreaking storytelling in the Star Wars universe.

In a new behind-the-scenes Andor featurette, Cassian Andor actor Diego Luna revealed his approach to playing an outsider during the Star Wars Disney+ show's Aldhani arc. Andor is incredibly unique among Star Wars movies and TV shows. Rather than a deeper exploration into the Skywalker family tree or even those directly associated with the Skywalker Saga, Andor focuses on the everyday individuals and the on-the-ground work that went into overthrowing the Empire just a few years before A New Hope. It seems that view helped guide Luna in his role, as he wanted to give it a more authentic feeling.

In the Andor featurette posted by Empire Magazine on X, Cassian Andor actor Diego Luna explained that he elected not to practice with the cast members portraying the Aldhani rebel infiltration team prior to shooting. Like his character, Luna explained that he wanted to be a genuine outsider to the group to build in a level of authenticity:

"I remember I was asked if I wanted to rehearse with them, and I said, 'No, not really.' And I think it paid. They had been rehearsing for quite a while, and they had dynamics that I didn't understand."

This decision by Diego Luna to keep a distance between himself and the other members of the cast to deliver a convincing, authentic performance is precisely the nature of Andor more broadly, and, as Luna said, it paid.

Andor truly is unique in the Star Wars universe. By focusing on non-Jedi, the show takes a closer look at what everyday people were experiencing during the Empire's tyrannical takeover, and it reveals that not all heroes in the Rebellion were flashy powerful Jedi, nor were they even names that the original trilogy's heroes knew. This is truly a beautiful perspective for Star Wars to have shown because it nods to the fact that rebellions and hope can't be attributed to just one person or just one family line—instead, heroes exist all around.

The show's focus on such themes also reflects a connection to the real world that isn't often seen in the Star Wars universe. Star Wars is famously meant to be a galaxy far, far away, and many of Star Wars' best movies represent that in a way that is still meaningful, compelling, and very entertaining. However, Andor adds something new by forming connections between real life and Star Wars to draw out major themes around war, heroism, politics, and humanity.

Andor adds something new by forming connections between real life and Star Wars.

Thrillingly, it seems likely this innovative tone and thematic focus will only continue in Star Wars, as Andor season 2 is in the works. While the details of the show's second season haven't been fully revealed, updates from the actors and creators have reflected that the new season will be just as inventive, groundbreaking, and exciting as season 1. Given Diego Luna's level of dedication to his acting performance coming across as authentic, it's perhaps no surprise that Andor season 2 is one of Star Wars' most exciting upcoming projects.
