Fallout 4 Now Has One Of The Series' Most Controversial RPG Mechanics
Summary A new mod adds a customizable Karma system to Fallout 4, giving players the power to monitor and control their moral choices in the game.
A fully-fledged, reactive Karma system reintroduces titles based on player actions, resembling Fallout 3's system hated by fans.
The mod ensures compatibility with the upcoming next-gen update, catering to those who enjoy implementing Karma in the game despite its flaws.
Fallout 4 tasks players with making some tough decisions as they embark upon a journey across the Commonwealth Wasteland, and now a new mod is looking to judge whether the actions of the Sole Survivor are morally reprehensible or not. Throughout many of Bethesda's older games like Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Karma played a key role in determining how the world reacted to the player. Despite its widespread inclusion, the system is widely hated by fans who have criticized it for being obtuse, poorly implemented, and arbitrary in what it deems to be good or evil.
However, over on Nexus Mods, user bp42s shared their solution for fans who want to experience Karma while playing Fallout 4, a game that famously dropped the much-maligned mechanic. The add-on introduces a "fully-fledged reactive karma system" that can be monitored through a new Pip-Boy tab and even includes titles depending on the Sole Survivor's Karmic standing, much like in Fallout 3. To make things even better, the mod is fully customizable with a wealth of options for players to tweak to help create a Karma system that best suits what they want out of the game.

Fallout 4 Didn't Want Bad Karma
Some Players Like Feeling Judged By NPCs
Aside from adding the customizable Karma system to Fallout 4, bp42s went out of their way to ensure that the minor expansion will work for nearly all versions of the game. Following Bethesda's announcement that another "next-gen" update will be released for the game in the near future, many members of the community feared that their mods would cease to function. Fortunately, this won't be the case for the Karma mod which will be compatible with the new patch when it's eventually rolled out across all platforms.
While there are doubtless those who enjoy the Karma mechanic in older Bethesda RPGs, the system is widely considered to be outdated and poorly realized. The biggest complaint leveled at the system is the arbitrary nature of the acts it deems punishable, leading to confusion for those who want to play a character who straddles the line between good and evil. While it may not have been developed by Bethesda, Fallout: New Vegas, created by Obsidian Entertainment, is notorious for giving players bad Karma for stealing from Caesar's Legion but no Karma for murdering them.
Whether or not the community is a fan of Bethesda's take on Karma, the ability to implement it in Fallout 4 is still refreshing. The modding community is all about taking the vanilla experience and tweaking it to be more accessible and enjoyable for as many players as possible, catering to every different taste. At least not when the Sole Survivor does something that everyone dislikes, they'll be rewarded with a fancy title.
