This article contains spoilers for Under the Bridge and Euphoria.Javon "Wanna" Walton's role in the Hulu true crime miniseries Under the Bridge is a harsh reminder of his Euphoria character Ashtray's devastating fate in the hit teen show. In 2019, an 11-year-old Walton made his acting debut in HBO's Euphoria season 1 as Ashtray, the precocious younger brother and business partner of local drug dealer Fezco (Angus Cloud). Walton's character returned in Euphoria season 2 in 2022, often seen lurking in corners and keeping an eye out for any potential threats to himself or Fez.

That same year, Walton landed a recurring role in season 3 of the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. Now, the young actor is starring in his latest Euphoria follow-up, Under the Bridge. Based on Rebecca Godfrey's 2005 book of the same name, Under the Bridge tells the true story of the teens who killed Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl from Canada whose murder in 1997 shook the nation. Walton's character in Under the Bridge is reminiscent of the ill-fated Ashtray in certain respects, reigniting anger over the Euphoria character's tragic ending.

Javon Walton's Under The Bridge Character, Warren, Shares A Similar Tragic Backstory To Euphoria's Ashtray

Both Characters Were Abandoned By Their Parents & Entered A World Of Crime With Horrific Outcomes

Walton's characters in Under the Bridge and Euphoria share similar backstories that led them down dark paths. In Under the Bridge, Walton plays Warren Glowatski, the only male perpetrator involved in the murder of Reena Virk. Under the Bridge episode 3's ending reveals that while Warren was not directly responsible for Reena's murder, he witnessed Kelly kill her and said nothing, thus making him an accessory. Although the exact ages of each character in Under the Bridge are not explicitly stated, the real Warren was 16 years old when Reena's murder took place.

Four months before Reena's murder (around the time Warren's dad abandoned him), Warren got beat up as part of a gang initiation ritual.

Earlier in Under the Bridge episode 3, it is revealed that Warren's father locked up his trailer and jetted off to Vegas months ago, leaving Warren with no place to stay. This was foreshadowed in episode 1 when Warren called his dad from the police station and begged him to come home to Victoria, where Under the Bridge takes place. Four months before Reena's murder (around the time Warren's dad abandoned him), Warren got beat up as part of a gang initiation ritual.

Reena Virk was murdered on November 14, 1997.

From the time he was a toddler, Ashtray was enmeshed in a world of crime.

In Euphoria, Ashtray was abandoned by his mother as a baby when she gave him to Fezco's grandmother, Marie, as collateral in exchange for drugs. When his mother never returned to pick him up, Marie raised him as her own until she became comatose, at which point a barely-adolescent Fez took on the role of Ashtray's caretaker. Fez was also saddled with running Marie's convenience store and drug-dealing business, and Ash became his partner in both. From the time he was a toddler, Ashtray was enmeshed in a world of crime.

Like Warren, Ashtray also got caught up in (multiple) murder(s) as a young teen, although in Ash's case, he was the one who did the actual killing.

Ashtray got his nickname after Marie caught him trying to eat her cigarette butts when he was a baby. His real name in Euphoria is unknown.

Like Warren, Ashtray also got caught up in (multiple) murder(s) as a young teen, although in Ash's case, he was the one who did the actual killing. In the Euphoria season 2 premiere, Fez's supplier, Mouse, confronts him about the police raid in the season 1 finale, gun in hand. To protect Fez, Ashtray killed Mouse with a hammer and severely injured his partner, Custer, whom Ash eventually kills when he suspects Custer snitched about Mouse's murder. Although the two characters have very different personalities and demeanor, Warren and Ashtray's familial backstories and criminal histories definitely mirror each other.

Ashtray's Fate In Euphoria's Season 2 Finale Is Still One Of The Show's Most Devastating Moments

Ashtray Was Just A Kid When He Was Brutally Killed Off By A SWAT Team In Euphoria

Mouse's murder hovered over Fez and Ash's heads until it all came to a boil in the Euphoria season 2 finale. Wearing a wire, Custer tried to get the boys to confess by telling them that the police found Mouse's body, prompting Ashtray to fatally stab him in the neck. Ash then barricaded himself in the bathroom with his arsenal of firearms right before the SWAT team burst through the front door. After the initial shootout through the bathroom door, Ash played dead before shooting one of the officers, resulting in another officer shooting Ashtray in the head.

Ashtray's death remains one of the most tragic and infuriating moments in all of Euphoria; not only was it heartbreaking because he was so young, but it also felt rushed and purely for shock value.

In a season full of wild, unexpected moments, killing off Ash in the Euphoria season 2 finale was the most shocking. Ashtray's death remains one of the most tragic and infuriating moments in all of Euphoria; not only was it heartbreaking because he was so young, but it also felt rushed and purely for shock value. Ash's death also solidified the talented actor's departure from the show, meaning Walton won't be returning for the indefinitely delayed Euphoria season 3 (if it ever happens).

Under The Bridge's True Story Reveals That Warren's Fate Will Be Very Different From Ashtray

The Real Warren Glowatski Is Still Alive Today

Only the first three of the eight-episode miniseries have aired at the time of writing, but the true story indicates that Warren will not end up like Ashtray in Under the Bridge. In real life, Warren was convicted of second-degree murder in June 1999 and sentenced to life in prison at 16 years old. He showed remorse for his involvement in Reena's murder and committed to restorative justice work, which allowed him to make amends with Reena's parents, Manjit and Suman Virk. He was eventually granted day parole in June 2007 and was released on full parole in June 2010.

Warren has been a free man for the last 14 years and is still alive today. It has yet to be seen how much of the true story after the perpetrators' convictions will be covered in the miniseries, but based on what happened to the real Warren, Walton's character in Under the Bridge will have a very different fate from Ashtray in Euphoria.
