Ozark Star Julia Garner Cast In Barbarian Director’s New Horror Movie
Summary Julia Garner joins the cast of upcoming horror film Weapons, directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian.
Josh Brolin will also make his horror return for Weapons.
The success of Barbarian fuels anticipation for Weapons, with same team on board.
Ozark star Julia Garner has been cast in the upcoming horror film Weapons. Weapons is an multi-story horror epic surrounding the tale of a series of disappearances of high school students in a small town. The horror film is from emergent director Zach Cregger, who is known for his previous work on Barbarian.
As per Collider, Weapons has now cast Garner in one of the lead roles. The nature of Garner’s part has yet to be revealed, as much of the specifics of Weapons’ plot are still under wraps.
Will Weapons Be As Successful As Barbarian?
While the nature of her character remains unknown, the Ozark actress is a great choice for the horror film. Winning an Emmy for Ozark, Garner has already shown her star power as her career develops. She has also had a number of film roles, including in The Assistant, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Garner joins a cast that also includes Josh Brolin making his horror return. Brolin was not originally going to be the protagonist in the film, as that role was going to be played by Pedro Pascal before being swapped out.
Weapons has big shoes to fill as it follows up Barbarian. Released in 2022, Barbarian tells a horror story of a woman whose stay at an Airbnb goes wrong when she discovers that the house she rented is not what it initially seemed to be. Upon its release, Barbarian received nearly universal acclaim. It got a 93% Tomatometer among critics and a lower (but still favorable) 71% audience approval rating. The film also made $45.3 million at the worldwide box office, representing massive returns on its estimated $4.5 million budget.

Weapons includes many of the same team members that worked on Barbarian. In addition to director Cregger, producers Roy Lee, J.D. Lifshitz, and Raphael Margules are also returning to work on Weapons. The shared team on the two films will hopefully allow Weapons to create the same kind of high-level vision as Barbarian did.
Barbarian is currently available to rent on Prime Video.
Weapons also has an edge now that Cregger is more established within the horror realm. When he directed Barbarian, Cregger was widely an unknown entity. It seems his success with Barbarian is already paying off in his ability to get respected actors such as Garner and Brolin in his cast. Now, the Barbarian name can be used as fuel for Weapons' publicity and hopefully help the film to achieve even greater box office heights than its predecessor.
